I think he has that backwards, don't you? We are following in his footsteps. And we're fortunate to have such an inspiring teacher.

As always, PTP, you said it best. Speaking for myself, I don't give because I expect thanks.
I give because I know that somewhere, sometime, what I have done will put a smile on someone's face. The fact that that face also included Johnny's, is icing on the cake. Afterall, he himself has made me smile countless times.
That he should take the time to write this letter is beyond touching.

I am completely undone by Johnny, He continues to inspire me to be a better person on a daily basis and here he goes and does something else that just makes me love him more and try even harder to be a better person. Thank you Johnny and The Zone for making the world a better place.

Good Pirate! The BEST Pirate. Apparently, "Take all you can, and give nothing back" was just one of those "suggestions" in the Pirate Code, because Johnny keeps giving, and inspiring others to give as well.
I'm proud to be a part of this project, and silly as it may seem, Johnny was speaking to all of us, but just a little bit to me personally.

I couldn't help noticing that it looks like this amazing note was typed on a real typewriter. Would I ever love to have a gander at that! I picture a vintage, 1920's model, a la Sam Spade. Picture Johnny, wearing one of his white undershirts, sitting at his desk in his home in the South of France, hammering away at the keys of a black antique typing machine, writing a Thank You note to his fans on the Zone... WOW!!!
Parlez, now there's a mighty cool image! I noticed the type too
This man is unbelieable, and just think how very many people all over the world that he has touched
Thank you Johnny for being there for us, and
thank you all on the Zone! What a wonderful place to pop back in from time to time and relive a love for a very generous man through you!
I love forward to winter when I can come back and join in a book group, etc.

PTP - thank you for those perfect words. I tried to make that part of his letter stand out in my post but I don't convey very well what is in my mind and in my heart the way I need to with words. You did it for me. Thank you.

to the Zone, redpupluv! And congratulations on being one of the lucky ones who met Johnny during the PUBLIC ENEMIES filming. You will find your experience (that JD was "so nice") confirmed by hundreds of your fellow Zoners. Yes, he really is that kind.

Me too! Everytime I come here I read the new comments and nod my head furiously in agreement.
I have also printed Johnny's letter off and have it stuck on my fridge next to the one from last year. Yesterday, I must have read it a dozen times and each time I smiled to myself and felt a warm glow inside.

I'm proud to be a fan (yes, I know he hates the word...) of this good man, and I'm very thankful to be associated with this wonderful group of fellow fans/admirers/followers...Zoners!

I am still in awe over the letter
I had no idea Johnny hates the word "fan"...
this is the first I am hearing this
I am just curious when/where he said that and what would he prefer
we identify ourselves as? I want more than anything to do
what Johnny wants....thank you
It's man devouring man my dear..then who are we to deny it in here?

"Hate" may have been too strong of a word, DeboraZane....I don't want to stray too far off the topic, but FYI -- here's the AOL Unscripted video clip where Johnny talks about fans.
What a lovely gesture by a man whose generosity knows no boundary.
The altruistic kindness by Zoners all over the world is as heartfelt as
Johnny's appreciation.
Thank you for sharing Johnny's words with us Natalie.

Everytime I watch that video I get the shivers...I think he is talking about the Zone...I really do. I know its just a feeling...but it is an excellent description of the Zone (or am I off target here?) Tim was almost prompting him to dismiss them as inaccurate and questionable.
He could have just graciously brushed aside the question and said "I dont know what they say, I don't read them."
But he didn't. And sometimes I think about that.

Thanks for posting that link, Theresa. It was good to see that again. And I don't think it's straying too far off topic. In a way, that is also a thank you from Johnny. At least in my imagination. I've always gotten the impression that the Zone is one of those sites he spoke of. I could be wrong. But, ooo, what if I'm right?

Hi, redpupluv! Welcome to the Zone!
I too met Johnny during filming of Public Enemies, along with a few others in this group.
It is astounding to consider how busy he is, and yet how kind, thoughtful and generous he is. What a thrill to have Johnny know that we care, and that we put that caring into something worthwhile to honor him on his birthday.
