Johnny Depp will be honored with a career award at the Rome Film Festival, where “Modì” — his biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani — will launch in Italy following its bow at San Sebastian.

“Modì,” which stars Italy’s Riccardo Scamarcio as the bad boy painter and sculptor who became famous for the groundbreaking modern style of his portraits and nudes, will play in Rome’s non-competitive Grand Public section before being released in Italy by new production/distribution player Be Water in tandem with Maestro Distribution and Medusa Film.

Besides Scamarcio, the film’s stellar cast also comprises Al Pacino as international art collector Maurice Gangnat, Antonia Desplat, Stephen Graham (“The Irishman”), Bruno Gouery (“The White Lotus”), Ryan McParland (“Halo”) and Sally Phillips (“Bridget Jones” trilogy).

“Modì” takes place in Paris during World War I, over the course of 72 turbulent hours “that will become a turning point in his life, ultimately solidifying his reputation as an artistic legend,” according to the film’s provided synopsis.

The film is produced by Barry Navidi Prods. and IN.2 Films with Andrea Iervolino, CEO of the Ilbe Group.

“Modì” marks Depp’s return to directing after his 1997 debut with the critically panned “The Brave.” It is also one of the actor’s first projects since his 2022 court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, in which he sued her for defamation after she accused him of domestic abuse. Depp ultimately won the case, though the controversy caused by it has impacted his career. He made his festival comeback in Cannes last year with a starring role in Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry.”

The 19th edition of the Rome Film Festival will run Oct. 16-27.

The Rome Film Festival will fete Johnny Depp with its Lifetime Achievement award and screen the actor’s latest directorial effort, Modi – Three Days on the Wings of Madness during its 2024 edition.

Described as a “seventy-two-hour whirlwind in the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani”, the film follows the artists through a chaotic series of events through the streets of war-torn Paris in 1916. French actress Antonia Desplat and Riccardo Scamarcio round out the cast.

The synopsis reads: On the run from the police, his desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow artists Maurice Utrillo, Chaim Soutine, and Modi’s muse, Beatrice Hastings. Modi seeks advice from his art dealer and friend, Leopold Zborowski — however, after a night of hallucinations, the chaos in Modi’s mind reaches a crescendo when faced with an American collector, Maurice Gangnat, who has the power to change his life.

Modi heads to Rome following a debut screening at San Sebastian.

Viggo Mortensen will also receive a Lifetime Achievement award at this year’s Rome Film Festival. Mortensen will screen The Dead Don’t Hurt at the festival. A story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s, The Dead Don’t Hurt centers on Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a fiercely independent woman who embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holgen Olsen (Mortensen). After meeting Olsen in San Francisco, she agrees to travel with him to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada, where they start a life together. The outbreak of the Civil War separates them when Olsen makes a fateful decision to fight for the Union.

The edition of the Rome Film Festival will run from October 16-27.
