Pirates of the Caribbean 6 without Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow ‘doomed to failure’

EXCLUSIVE: Pirates of the Caribbean 6 without Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow is "doomed to failure" at the box office, claims a respected industry insider.

Last week, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer let slip that the sixth movie in the franchise is set to be a reboot.

Fan hearts sank as deep as Davy Jones’ locker following rumours that Disney is planning on Pirates 6 having a black female lead rather than Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow at the helm of the Black Pearl.

Nevertheless, the same report claims that the studio wants the star (who was Oscar-nominated for the part) back in the new movie, but only in a supporting role.

Yet if it’s a total reboot without Sparrow, Disney can expect a flop bigger than the one left by the Kraken itself on the ocean surface.

That’s according to a respected industry insider who spoke exclusively with Express.co.uk on the matter; the same one who told us Depp would be considering a return to the franchise at the moment.

The source told us: “Looking at the 2024 slate, it’s a lot of soft reboots. One of the rules of the entertainment business seems to be ‘IF SOMETHING IS SUCCESSFUL, THERE MUST BE MORE’. Much like other creative businesses, risk mitigation is the name of the game at the moment until someone does something different that audiences adopt.”

On Bruckheimer’s Pirates 6 reboot plans, the insider said: “This feels like a threshold moment in terms of gradually escalating the dismissiveness of Disney's fanbase. Essentially giving the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise a ‘hard reboot treatment’ since the previous instalment Dead Men Tell No Tales [UK title: Salazar’s Revenge] didn’t meet box office expectations, and was not well received. What makes this whole situation unique is Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios (who was in charge of the live-action end of the studio), stepped down last month and even previously stated that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Hocus Pocus 3 were their top priorities."

The source continued: “However, I have high hopes in the independent sector, like Johnny Depp's indie productions, there is a lot of potential, great undiscovered talent out there, and a need for authenticity. Putting Depp in such a film project will undoubtedly raise the perception of value in the cinema-going experience.

“There is nothing better than genuine on-screen charisma and chemistry but it’s going to require a rethink for Hollywood, an understanding of what it means to stick to the core value of what is being created throughout each story, through its characters and how reboots that lose their core value are more than likely doomed to failure. Are millions of people going to pay $15 to see a film in movie theatres based on a new, younger cast alone? I don’t think so.

“Any revival of Pirates of the Caribbean would have to be approached as an artistic decision rather than one that's taken purely for the potential financial gain. How this reboot handles that concern should become clear whenever its plot details are officially announced.”

Interesting points raised by these comments from nebraska.

The last Pirates movie was in 2017. Seven years ago. If it takes a year or a year and a half to make, edit, market ... Maybe late 2025 or even into 2026. So 8 or 9 years. Is that enough time to build a fresh ticket buying audience? Will kids who loved Pirates now be young adults/teens with loyalty to Captain Jack Sparrow or Johnny? I'm certain I am not the target market, they will be aiming for younger people who might be ready for whatever thing is offered next. I can see why Disney might think it's worth the gamble.

I think a reboot might work for new audiences but the success of the previous films and box office draw was definitely due to Johnny's unique take on the Captain Jack character. If they have strong characters and it would have to have a really good script, never mind those involved in filming it, it might work. Each story or rumour that comes up always includes Johnny's name which indicates how strongly he's tied to the franchise. Marketing will also have to be top notch. Of course we don't know if Johnny has any interest and my instinct says he doesn't. Why go back over old ground when he's busy making new ground and doing what he loves which is creating something.

Pirates of the Caribbean became the amazing success it was because of Johnny Depp, period. He took a bland role and recrafted it. He simply IS Pirates of the Caribbean. So, I see no point in this exercise. Now, if they want to make a pirates movie with a female as the lead, go forth and do it. But --- it will not, ever, be Pirates of the Caribbean.

The movie studios have used different actors to play Spiderman, Batman, Superman, etc. All of those franchises have done well because of the comic books that still hold the targeted audiences.

On the other hand, WB is trying to reboot Harry Potter into a TV series with different actors, obviously, and having a very difficult time.
There are not a lot of folks in that fandom that want the reboot or different actors playing such iconic roles.

Also the Fantastic Beasts series didn't perform to expectations; not because of Johnny or even Ezra Miller's issues, but because it hasn't been a good enough story with best-selling books leading the way. It was supposed to be five films but may not survive after the third installment.

I don't mind a Pirates reboot, but they would be silly to recast the original actors and play out the same stories like with Batman and the others. It would need to be a different set of pirates battling a different set of story lines. POTC 4 and 5 didn't do as well at the Box Office as they had hoped. And it is extremely expensive to film in tropical locations with ships.

Maybe they could reboot the genre. Movies like Captain Blood, Treasure Island, Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, even Peter Pan, could be more of the inspiration for a new set of stories. :twocents:

Well said, SnoopyDance. I agree with your thoughts. :agree: :agreesign:
Leave POTC alone and establish a new 'franchise' if they want to continue a pirate theme.
There are plenty of options to choose from.
