55th Karlovy Vary IFF welcome Johnny Depp

The festival will recognize and pay tribute to the acclaimed actor’s extensive career and lasting legacy on the film industry globally.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will honor prolific American actor, producer and musician Johnny Depp at its 55th annual celebration taking place from August 20th–28th, 2021. The festival will pay tribute to Depp’s significant contributions to film throughout his expansive career, spanning several decades and earning the actor numerous accolades including three Academy Award nominations, a Golden Globe and ten nominations, a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor and six nominations, and 14 People’s Choice Awards. To honor Depp’s ever-growing filmography and artistic capabilities, the festival will screen his most recent cinematic producer credits, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan (2020) and Minamata (2020), the latter also featuring his standout performance.

The multifaceted artist made his acting debut in the supernatural horror Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). From the onset of his career, Depp’s persuasive acting helped many films gain their cult status, including What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Arizona Dream (1993), Dead Man (1995), Donnie Brasco (1997) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). During this time, he also began his long-term collaboration with renowned filmmaker Tim Burton, starring in Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Sleepy Hollow (1999).

Johnny Depp became highly sought after in the world of film with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) which brought him his first Academy Award nomination in 2004, followed by another two for Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the film that won him a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor.

An equally important chapter of Depp’s career started in 2011 with his first venture into film production. Hugo (2011), directed by Martin Scorsese, screened to critical acclaim and received 11 Academy Award nominations. Dark Shadows (2012), Mortdecai (2015) and Minamata (2020) followed in recent years, all of which Depp also starred.

“We’re incredibly honored to welcome to the Festival an icon of the contemporary cinema,” said KVIFF’s executive director Krystof Mucha and the Festival’s artistic director Karel Och. “We’ve admired Mr. Depp for such a long time and are thrilled to bestow this honor on him.”
And Wit, was his vain frivolous pretence
Of pleasing others, at his own expense

Karlovy Vary film festival to honour Johnny Depp, Michael Caine, Jan Sverak

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is the second European event this week to announce it will honour Johnny Depp, paying tribute to the actor’s career at the 55th edition of the event (August 20-28).

The tribute follows an announcement from San Sebastian film festival yesterday that Depp will be awarded its highest prize, the Donostia award, in September.

It is expected that Depp will attend both events in person.

A statement from Karlovy Vary described the recognition as “a tribute to Depp’s significant contributions to film throughout his expansive career” and to the “acclaimed actor’s lasting legacy on the film industry globally”.

“We’re incredibly honoured to welcome to the Festival an icon of the contemporary cinema,” said KVIFF executive director Krystof Mucha and artistic director Karel Och. “We’ve admired Mr. Depp for such a long time and are thrilled to bestow this honour on him.”

Depp is a divisive figure in the international film industry. In November 2020 he lost a libel case against UK newspaper The Sun, after it described him as a “wife-beater” in a 2018 article, claiming he assaulted ex-wife Amber Heard. The actor remains involved in a defamation lawsuit against Heard in the US.

His most recent credits include leading Andrew Levitas’ Berlin 2020 title Minamata; and producing Julien Temple’s documentary Crock Of Gold: A Few Rounds With Shane MacGowan.

The festival will also honour UK actor Michael Caine with the outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema award. Caine appears in Lina Roessler’s festival title Best Sellers, which the actor will present in person at the festival.

The festival’s President’s award will be given to Czech director Jan Sverak, whose credits include Kolya, which won the foreign-language Oscar in 1996 and whose films have played at the festival multiple times. He is now completing his new feature Bethlehem Lights.

The festival will close with Sean Durkin’s The Nest starring Jude Law and Carrie Coon.
Juries

The festival’s four-person main jury includes Greek director Christos Nikou, whose debut feature Apples premiered in Venice Horizons in 2020, going on to play festivals including Toronto and Tokyo.

Joining Nikou are Danish filmmaker Eva Mulvad, whose family drama Love Child played at Toronto in 2019; Polish actor Marta Nieradkiewicz, who played the lead role in Netflix series Ultraviolet; and Christoph Terhechte, managing director of DOK Leipzig.

The five-person East of the West jury consists of Latvian producer Alise Gelze; directors Atanas Georgiev from Macedonia, Michal Hogenauer from Czech Republic, and Tonia Mishiali from Cyprus; and Israeli film critic Ariel Schweitzer.

Is anyone feeling slightly overwhelmed by all the wonderful Jontent today? I was sure one of you would have done a much better job than I can but here are a few favourites. The crowd love is amazing - if you look at pictures and clips people have posted see how individuals look at him - such admiration and warmth.

He and Ethan Hawke had dinner and took a photo with the waiters.

More to come tomorrow.

Lbock captured lovely ones

My favourite - of him looking up

From Julian Temple - second person in recent weeks to come out swinging for him (other being the director of San Sebastian FF).

I dearly wish high profile film people could see - that sentiments like this actually resonate and make sense.
