Johnny Depp to Receive San Sebastian Donostia Award

Described by Spain’s San Sebastian Festival as “one of contemporary cinema’s most talented and versatile actors,” American actor Johnny Depp will receive San Sebastian’s highest honor, its Donostia Award, in a ceremony taking place on Sept. 22 at the festival’s Kursaal Auditorium.

Depp is already one of San Sebastian’s favorite sons, having figured as one of the highest profile star presences at last year’s on-site festival, where he co-presented “Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane McGowan” with director Julien Temple.

This year’s award puts Depp among recent honorees including Ethan Hawke, Sigourney Weaver, Judy Dench, Penelope Cruz and Viggo Mortensen.

Breaking out in the early 1990s with lead roles in John Waters’ “Cry Baby” and Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands,” Depp secured his left of field artistic credentials making films with prestigious foreign directors such as Emir Kusturica (“Arizona Dream”) and Lasse Hallström (“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”) repeated twice with Burton and working with indie greats and mavericks such as Jim Jarmusch (“Dead Man”) and Terry Gilliam (“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”).

Depp’s star status was secured, however, by his out-there turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie saga from 2003 to 2017.

“Elaborately decked out with a bandana, raccoon-like black eye makeup, dreadlocks, two beard braids and lousy teeth,” Variety reported, the“frequently slurring his words but usually intelligible,” the “magnetic star” “puts one in mind of some of Marlon Brando’s more oddball screen outings.”

It may be no coincidence that Depp, who has often played misfits, the San Sebastian Festival noted in its Prize announcement on Monday, directed Brando in his directorial debut, 1995’s “The Brave.” Both Brando and now Depp became Hollywood icons and rebels.

And once again the media piles on the hate and the real people pile on the love.

I simply cannot deal with those old school feminists in the mode of Roberta Kaplan who are basically hate men and are completely one dimensional. They are fighting a fight from 30 years ago.

Loving the response from the festival to the crazies who criticized it (must be a tiny portion ah ah).

I love to see it, I wish a few more would stand up and not defend him - just state the facts.

https://variety.com/2021/film/global/jo ... 235041084/

Loving the end part of the statement - “The rejection of all violent behavior and the presumption of innocence are and will always be our ethical principles.”

Throwing some shade.

I actually wish someone with nothing to lose would actually directly call out HER behaviour and lies.

My only slight quibble is he isn't being lynched on social media any more it is the corrupt mainstream that has an axe to grind.

I am surprised Johnny agreed to accept this award. The festival would only announce it if JD agreed. Johnny has seemed not much interested in awards and honours in the past. Film festival awards are often associated with promotion for a movie but Johnny does not have an upcoming movie to promote.
The backlash from a loud person/group with minimum information which was then amplified by media should have been expected.
I not saying that the festival or Johnny have made an error of judgement, just that Johnny putting himself in the spotlight at this time is unexpected.

I just found a piece in ScreenDaily about Wim Wenders, the German film director, defending the two festivals that are honoring JD for his work. I am hoping we will begin to see more people stand up for Johnny. And yes, obviously, right now it takes a lot of courage.
