Look, it's absolutely fine that Minamata probably won't be in the Oscars. The film has all sorts of other awards from other countries where the film industry is able to identify an electrically compelling movie. That ain't here -- the US is all about making money from shlock material that retreads the same story over and over.
My only desire is to be able to sit in a US theater and watch this film. In lieu of that, I will proudly watch it online as I have many other fabulous films.
Hollywood is a has-been. Film ain't happening here any more.
Well, fireflydances, that’s an opening paragraph of truth for the ages! Johnny would be giving it his hand-clap applause, vigorously and non-stop, were he to have the pleasure of reading it.
Thank you for every word of your post!
(For myself, I would have to add my desire to be able to purchase a Region 1 DVD and a CD of the score. )

Thank you very much. I was in that sort of mood when I wrote that paragraph.

Agree on the first part but it's extremely reductive to say that "film" isn't happening in the US. Many great directors working right now are American.

Crazy how this movie has struggled to get a decent release when it's clearly well received by the audiences and critics who saw it, judging by the ratings. We get it, Hollywood, you don't want to cast JD in big stuff anymore but surely it wouldn't hurt to release this one movie that's dying to be released? All the billions he made them and they won't even give him this as a proper release on a streaming service at least.

It's a perfect example why JD dumped Hollywood.
On the otherhand, covid is running rampid in the US and maybe the theaters are afraid of not making the money they want. This one is EXTREMELY contagious and I would be uncomfortable sitting in a theater near someone whose mask is off eating popcorn or any other kind of food or drink right now. I really want to see this film but I don't want to get sick either. Almost everyone I know has caught this or been exposed to someone who has or had it.

I've written to Samuel Goldwyn Films. The film is clearly listed there and there is a form to ask questions. Never hurts to write to anyone. Sometimes, more requests for info spur answers.

That's why I said they could at least release it on a streaming service. His past movies do so well on Netflix and yet they won't acquire his new movies like Minamata.
What's the issue here? The film is getting released, several companies are shifting dates because of Omicron. I gotta say I'm partial to a hybrid model these days with a streaming component but it's really cool that they're doing a proper theatrical run.

Tonight, I have been watching on my phone a very long interview between Variety, Johnny Depp and Andrew Levitas talking about Minamata. When I look at the screen it says (at top) Variety Presents, and (at the bottom) Minamata For Your Consideration. I have searched for it on the internet. I fell into this on Instagram. I am now watching segment 3. So fascinating and in depth, thoughtful.
I think it's on Ifod.net on Instagram. I will see if I can directly bring it up. Yep, there it is!! Go to Or just look for Ifod.net. There are three segments. Worth watching.
Something else on Ifod.net

Found this over at Samuel Goldwyn Films. See the tab that says "buy tickets" -- it opens on a list of theaters that will be showing Minamata. Two in my neck of the woods, DC and Silver Spring. Can not believe it is finally arriving.
