MINAMATA Updates

Apparently it is showing in LA with wider US release in January (source for that is IFOD).

Off topic but I am struggling with today: heartbroken that JD isn't in Fantastic Beasts - am going to avoid the trailer like a plague. And then to top it all Time magazine names Elon Musk person of the year.

On the plus side - JD is all over London still which is immensely cheering and the views of that Dior advert just keeping mounting.

Agreed, AdeleAgain. I have been beyond sad about the turn of events re JD and Grindelwald, especially since JD was really psyched to play that character.

Hoping and praying Minamata makes it to some safe venues on the east coast here in the States.

I noticed an announcement last week about Minamata opening in a theater in Los Angeles December 15th. Of course, didn't note the name of the theater but it was really exciting to see the first sign of a theater actually showing Minamata! My recollection is that I saw the announcement a day or two before Infinitum Nihil posted about the US Official Trailer. Likely it was Facebook. I will keep an eye out and come back and update this post if I find the name of the theater.

Thank you, SnoopyDances!
That’s the announcement I’ve been longing to see! Now if only there is a bit of serious promotion to accompany it - absolutely nothing yet - perhaps the distribution will do the film justice.

MINAMATA Updates

So I found this today. Harkins theaters appear to be located in Arizona. The link takes you to all the theaters managed by Harkins. I didn't investigate that far as I am located on the east coast. Perhaps the plan is to move east? I wouldn't be surprised if it takes some while for the distribution of the film to spread. I am sure movie theaters plan months ahead what they will show.

Release Date. January 7, 2022 · Rating. R - for language throughout. · Genre. Drama · Director. Andrew Levitas · Starring. Johnny Depp, Bill Nighy, Hiroyuki Sanada, ...

Thanks, fireflydances, for the update. I, too, am on the east coast but it is reassuring to know Minamata distribution is moving beyond the initial LA “opening” venues.

MINAMATA Updates

Unread post by fireflydances » Wed Dec 29, 2021 11:23 am

I noticed this morning that Fandango now has Minamata on it's website. Doesn't say much, "in theaters soon, you will be notified when tickets go on sale." The site encouraged me to include my email address and zip code. I did same, and I suggest as many of us as possible do this. Anything that will help Fandango understand that there is LOTS of interest in this movie. As I said yesterday, theaters have schedules. Some will have room to add Minamata soon, some will not and may wait on the sidelines to see if they should make room.

Go to all of the theater websites in your area and express interest, provide your information. Keep coming back.

UPDATE: So I just did the same thing at AMC Theaters. Set up an account and asked that I be notified when Minamata tickets go on sale. It is not yet listed as 'Coming Soon' which is the same situation with Landmark Theaters, but there is a poster and page where you are asked if you wish to be notified. AMC is the largest theater chain in the US.

Just tried Regal Theaters and Cinemark, a search for Minamata brings up absolutely nothing.

Thank you, fireflydances, for all your information, suggestions, and your infectious power of positive thinking.

I am, however, in the throes of uncomfortable reminders of The Weinstein Company’s shenanigans with respect to its limited release of The Libertine back in November of 2005. Promises, promises just to avoid being called out on the obvious. I finally got to see it at the Angelika (Film Center) in downtown NY on November 25th. Still have my ticket. That was a long time ago - a pilgrimage into NYC these days is no longer in the cards.

I’ve called local theaters re: Minamata. AMC theaters not only don’t have it on their “coming soon” and just plain “coming” rosters , the personnel flatly admit they’ve never even heard of it! Had to spell it out for them. At my local theater I added my name and email to the subscription/notification list for Fandango’s theater showings ….

I fear Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment may have, inadvertently, nailed the coffin shut by doing business with Samuel Goldwyn Films.

Well, if that's what starts happening, we need to elevate it to the attention of all Deppheads. More than anything I am asking people to get involved. EXPRESS your interest in seeing this movie and come back, over and over, if it's delayed. This is something we can do by actively following the film's distribution.

And this film was never going to be a blockbuster in this country. I won't even go into why but yeah.... Still, so many of the films I go to see are what is called arthouse releases, and the theaters are always filled. Maybe only ONE theater in the area, but still, if you want good cinema you have to actively ask for it.

How badly is the new variant of COVID affecting cinemas though - because going out and about in UK is dead atm. So if the delay is genuine it may not be a bad thing.

Personally I'll be astonished if this is nominated for anything - Hollywood is scared of its own shadow now - I would love to be wrong but the anti-JD lobby is overwhelming in a town where vested self interest and corrupt money rules.

But we have our own means to fight back - saw the Dark Shadows (honestly - not even close to one of JD's best) us number 5 on Netflix atm. Brilliant news - this is really how we can make our voices heard. Keep streaming those films of his! It will put money into his pocket to pay the lawyers and shows the streaming companies that we want to keep seeing him.

Your comments, AdeleAgain, are hard to read but I have to acknowledge the truth behind them. Seeing the phrase “anti-JD lobby” in print is sickening; the reality of its “overwhelming” existence is frightening.

The film itself just doesn't have enough traction. There are plenty and plenty of films that are already earmarked for the Oscars, Golden Globes, etc, and it'd take a miracle for them to get in. It's awesome that they're campaigning, but it should have happened way earlier.

Look, it's absolutely fine that Minamata probably won't be in the Oscars. The film has all sorts of other awards from other countries where the film industry is able to identify an electrically compelling movie. That ain't here -- the US is all about making money from shlock material that retreads the same story over and over.

My only desire is to be able to sit in a US theater and watch this film. In lieu of that, I will proudly watch it online as I have many other fabulous films.

Hollywood is a has-been. Film ain't happening here any more.
