WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS--Updates, Reviews and Discussion

Unread post by meeps » Mon May 14, 2018 7:45 am

This may just be a rumour, but this is the latest news about what Johnny's up to, when it comes to movies

Johnny Depp circling Ciro Guerra's 'Waiting For The Barbarians' (exclusive)

BY TOM GRATER13 MAY 2018

Johnny Depp has reached out to Colombian director Ciro Guerra to work with him, possibly on his next film, JM Coetzee adaptation Waiting For The Barbarians.

Guerra’s Birds Of Passage opened Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival this year. He also directed the Oscar-nominated Embrace Of The Serpent.

Depp would join Mark Rylance and Robert Pattinson in the project. The producers include Michael Fitzgerald (Three Burials). The film will be Guerra’s English-language debut and was first announced in 2016. It is being lined up to shoot in autumn this year.

Coetzee, a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is adapting his own novel. The story is a political thriller published in 1980, about a British magistrate in a small colonial town who begins to question his loyalty to the Empire.

Birds Of Passage is the third film by Guerra to screen at Cannes following The Wind Journeys (Los Viajes Del Viento, Un Certain Regard, 2009) and Embrace Of The Serpent (Directors’ Fortnight, 2015).

The Orchard has fought off stiff competition in Cannes to pick up North American rights to Birds Of Passage, which Guerra co-directed with producing partner Cristina Gallego.

Yes the thought that this autumn we could get to see shots of Johnny on-set with Robert Pattinson inter-mingled with the FB2 premiere is just too delicious.

Johnny's got a funny quote from the Dark Shadows junket about he and Tim wanting to do a vampire movie where the vampires didn't look like underwear models (referring to Twilight). Since then he's crossed paths with director Catherine Hardwicke on The Black Ghiandhola, and I suppose from your post Pattinson is attached to this project. Can't say I'm too excited about Pattinson specifically, but I suppose he's moved on from being an underwear model. :-O

Oh definitely. I actually have a bit of a soft spot for him because he reminds me a bit of Johnny - another one who hates being labelled and packaged for his good looks. He has a reputation for taking acting seriously and not doing obviously parts - he apparently got to hate the commercialism of the Twilight movies - a bit like Johnny felt about 21 Jump Street. This is complete speculation on my part but I am guessing that he's be incredibly respectful of Johnny's talents. And of course they are both Dior boys so if it happens no doubt Dior will be very happily dressing them both for the premier. But I am getting ahead of myself.

I saw Pattinson in a David Cronenberg movie from a few years ago, title escapes me, but he did a decent job, considering how intentionally disturbing and bizzare Cronenberg films generally are...

More news - sounds more confirmed this time, I think:

Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson, and Mark Rylance to Shoot a Movie in Morocco
By Zoubida Senoussi - May 17, 2018

Rabat – Morocco is set to welcome yet another Hollywood production. American actor, singer, and filmmaker, Johnny Depp, will soon fly to the kingdom with British actors Robert Pattinson and Mark Rylance to shoot “Waiting for the Barbarians,” produced by Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra.

“We hope to start shooting at the end of the year in Morocco. It will be my first film outside of Colombia and in English,” said the director in a statement to AFP.

Robert Pattinson and Mark Rylance will be the stars of this film, and shooting will begin in autumn. As for Depp, he contacted the Colombian producer to work under his direction and appear in the movie.

This political thriller inspired by apartheid in South Africa, tells the story of a British judge in a small colonial town, helpless in the face of an officer who provokes a war to kickstart his career.

The movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same name published in 1980 and written by South African writter John Maxwell, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 2003.

This will be Guerra’s first feature film in English. In 2016, the producer won the Oscar for best non-English film for his movie “El abrazo de la serpiente,” which was presented this year at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes.

“Waiting for the Barbarians” isn’t the only Hollywood movie that will be filmed this year in Morocco.

The famous Keanu Reeves’s saga “John Wick” is revving up for round three in the kingdom. The Canadian actor is set to shoot in the North African country, following filming in Japan and Montreal beginning April 25.

I think he likes the book. And I like that he is pursuing things that interest him, even if he's not the lead (Not that he ever clamored for the lead, but he has been pushed in that direction for some time, and it will be good to see him go his own way.)

Has there been anything concrete regarding this? I'd love to see Johnny in this project!

I am just doing detective work here so I may be wrong but .......

IFOD have a couple of picture of JD on 27 July at the Savoy Hotel in London - one of them is with John Caudwell, the founder of Phones 4u and an investor in various other enterprises (possibly independent films?) Terry Gilliam was also photographed there with Johnny and according to Robert Pattinson sightings - he was also there - supposedly Johnny and Robert were meeting producers and writers. Someone on Facebook was sitting in the bar of the Savoy reporting on them being there. Hard to tell if the Terry Gilliam thing was separate or part of this or coincidence - but anyway - fingers crossed .....

Interesting... Don't want to get my hopes up, but I'd love to see them work together again.
