Actor Johnny Depp spotted filming at Hatley Castle
KENDRA WONG

Actor Johnny Depp was spotted at Hatley Castle Wednesday filming scenes reportedly for his new movie, Richard Says Goodbye.

Sections of Hatley Castle were closed off to people, however, some still managed to sneak a few photos of the Pirates of the Caribbean star.

Wes Brown and his daughter Abby, who live close to the park, ventured down to the set on and off for the past three hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of Depp.

After a few tries, the duo managed to snap a shot of Depp, who was seen wearing a grey blazer and shirt on set (photo by Wes Brown below).

“Anytime we hear there’s a movie going on [at Hatley Castle] we try and come down and take pictures. But this was the first time we’ve actually had the opportunity to get pictures. It’s awesome,” said Brown, who plans on heading back down to the set later on tonight with his wife and other child in hopes of getting a group shot with Depp.

Richard Says Goodbye, directed by Wayne Roberts, features Depp as a college professor who lives his life with reckless abandon after being diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Depp was also in Vancouver last week, where he visited the B.C. Children’s Hospital dressed as Capt. Jack Sparrow.

If anyone is wondering where Hatley Castle is, it's in Victoria, which is the capital city of the Province of BC, on Vancouver Island.

Johnny Depp slips in — and out — of Royal Roads for film shoot
MICHAEL D. REID / TIMES COLONIST

Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp hasn’t been hiding in Greater Victoria — he’s been working.

Depp slipped into the capital region for two days this week to shoot movie scenes at Hatley Castle in Colwood, on the campus of Royal Roads University. It’s standing in as a college in the eastern U.S. for the movie Richard Says Goodbye.

Depp returned to Vancouver late Wednesday.

The actor, of Pirates of the Caribbean franchise fame, plays a caustic, binge-drinking college professor who decides to live the rest of his life recklessly after being diagnosed with a terminal illness.

On Wednesday morning, background performers cast as college students hadn’t yet had a glimpse of Depp, who has his own security team, around the Royal Roads campus.

“He’s nowhere to be found,” Jenny Tu said. “He’s good at hiding, being secretive about where he is.”

Added Kaillee Fawcett, a University of Victoria fine arts student: “I saw his chair, though!”

Katharine Harrold, Royal Roads’ vice-president communications and advancement, said that while the campus community was curious about Depp’s unexpected presence, people have been respectful.

“It’s been wonderful having Johnny Depp here,” Harrold said. “We’d like to thank him. He has been agreeable and kind enough to make himself available to a few fans here and there.”

Depp was joined by co-stars Rosemarie DeWitt (La La Land, Rachel Gets Married), Ron Livingston (Office Space), Danny Huston (Birth) and Zoey Deutch (Before I Fall).

Executive producer Warren Carr, who also worked in the region for The Glitter Dome (1984) and Little Women (1994), said the shoot aroused fond memories.

“Victoria is a very film-friendly place to come and shoot,” said Carr, who hired as many local crew as possible. “What it needs to develop further is a larger crew base, with people who live and work here.”

He praised Royal Roads for accommodating production during a tight window, and said crews were impressed by how respectful the community has been.

“It’s been very calm. Nobody has really asserted themselves,” Carr said between takes of one of biggest scenes filmed here. “We haven’t had autograph-hungry people lurking in the bushes. It’s been a nice, polite experience.”

While Depp has been elusive, he has agreed to pose for photographs since shooting began last month in Vancouver, where it wraps this weekend, Carr said. “He acknowledges his fans. There’s no question about that.”

The scene, shot in the Italian Garden, featured DeWitt and Livingston, who are married in real life.

“Because of its architecture, Royal Roads is a major creative centrepiece in the film,” Carr said.

Wayne Roberts, the film’s writer-director, scouted Hatley Castle himself and pushed for the film’s mostly Vancouver-based crews to come here, he said.

“This is all about tying him [Depp] to the location, to being at the college, coming outdoors, going indoors,” Carr said. “This is the root of it all. His scenes are all little bits and pieces, connectivity to interiors shot in Vancouver.”

Scenes shot at Royal Roads also feature the Neptune Stairs, croquet lawn, terrace and a hallway.

The filmmakers were so smitten with one of the Royal Roads peacocks — the bird “who likes peanuts, apparently” — that it was cast as a background performer.

So it sounds as though Johnny will be reprising his role as this is part of a trilogy - Katie Says Goodbye, Richard Says Goodbye - then the two characters come together for the last of the three. Sounds heavenly. Apart from the fact that these sound like such wonderful projects in themselves, I am all for more of the curly, tousled hair .........

Where did you see that this is supposed to be a trilogy? Kind of makes lies of the first two titles if true... how can they say goodbye in their own movies and then end up as a couple unless their illnesses aren't really that terminal? Obviously I haven't seen "Katie", but if she actually dies, it could hurt her dating chances for the alleged 3rd movie. I'm going to have to see "Richard" first before feeling one way or another about a possible trilogy.

Deauville Film Festival - I saw a post on IFOD's twitter feed translating from French - apologies I am technically incompetent and can't do a screen shot! Wayne Roberts and others did a press conference for Katie Says Goodbye in which they explained that it's a trilogy.

Did you see this - Olivia Coleman and Wayne Roberts talking about Katie Says Goodbye - it is from before Johnny was involved but watch through and you'll see the director talking about it being a trilogy. I wonder if they are doing something like releasing the three together or close to each other?

Good news!

Saban Films, DirecTV Land Johnny Depp-Starrer ‘Richard Says Goodbye’ For $3 Million: Toronto

by Mike Fleming Jr
September 10, 2018 4:42pm

EXCLUSIVE: Saban Films and DirecTV have closed a deal worth around $3 million for the North American rights to Richard Says Goodbye, the Wayne Roberts-directed drama that stars Johnny Depp, Zoey Deutch and Rosemarie DeWitt. The drama follows a college professor who lives his life with reckless abandon after being diagnosed with a terminal illness.

The film is eyeing a theatrical release in 2019. CAA Media Finance brokered it. Richard Says Goodbye was screened outside the festival for buyers at the Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas last Thursday and got several suitors.

This is Saban Films’ third acquisition during TIFF – they acquired Romans starring Orlando Bloom and partnered with DirecTV on the North American rights to Sarah Daggar-Nickson’s A Vigilante, starring Olivia Wilde.
I think we are all somewhat screwy, every single one of us.

Wonderful, wonderful news, SdubLU! Johnny finally stepping out to promote a film at a film festival venue is a major leap for him right now. It makes my heart sing!

Also, just a random thought, perhaps Johnny’s willingness to promote the film might figure into Saban Films’ selection of a release date . . .

Europe was particularly embracing of Johnny during the HV tour and that German interview was such a treasure. :heart2:

NOTE: Judi Dench is scheduled to receive this year’s Golden Icon Award at the ZFF on October 3rd. :heart3:
