So now I am so sad, so angry, and so totally at odds with anyone you tries to claim Johnny’s acting career is doing just fine, I apologize ahead of time if the rest of my tirade is borderline incoherent.
Global Road apparently sent City of Lies (aka LAbryinth; let’s hope they have the correct title this time) straight to DVD, but it’s not easy to order, especially in the States. And frankly, I DON’T WANT just a DVD version. I want a proper premiere. I want some grab-you-by-the gut promotion. I want to see this IN A THEATER! (I live in a densely populated part of the northeastern USA and the only theater The Professor could be seen in was a small specialty theater downtown in the Village. I never made it. Capitulated and rented it on Amazon - once. Decided to save my money for the DVD. BUT - it deserved so much better! Those snakes at Variety and the other 16 critics who panned the film - one positive review - must have been giddy with their “success”.) A Johnny Depp film is in danger of becoming known as a profitless exercise in wheel-spinning!
All kinds of excuses are being tossed around, including the negative light the film supposedly shines on the LAPD. Some are still referencing Johnny’s “bad behavior” on set, another lie cleared up long ago, but no one sets them straight. Where/who is his publicist or agent or whoever should be on top of all this garbage and undoing every knot and roadblock thrown in Johnny’s way before it even hits the ground. Mr. Waldman cannot do everything. Bottom line: film #2 is being quietly and hurriedly shuffled off to a DVD graveyard. Not only Johnny, but Forest Whitaker deserved more professional consideration than has gone down so far.
And if “they” get away with this one, what can we expect when it’s WFTB’s and Minamata’s turn? Will WB (the only Hollywood-based studio) continue backing Johnny for Grindelwald in FB3? And after those three, then what? Well known as a workaholic, Johnny has always thrived on working - constantly. He’d seemingly gotten to a place where he juggled music and acting in apparently fulfilling proportions. IMAO, to lose the opportunity to indulge that facet of his creative self because of that vile person (and those who are using her to their own ends) would be the epitome of all the injustice Johnny has endured and continues to endure.
