I have to admit, definitely turned up the heat for me on this movie. Thank you!

Thanks to IFOD for these stills!
I think we are all somewhat screwy, every single one of us.

Johnny Depp's Notorious B.I.G. thriller City of Lies pulled a month before release

City of Lies, the big-screen thriller starring Johnny Depp as an LAPD detective investigating the unsolved murder of the rapper Notorious B.I.G., has been pulled from Global Road’s release schedule a month before its planned wide release on Sept. 7. The distributor confirmed the move to EW but did not respond to request for further comment.

No new release date has been announced for the Brad Furman-directed film, which costars Forest Whitaker as a journalist who teams with Depp’s character in search of the truth.

Representatives for Furman, Depp, and Good Film Productions did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

City of Lies’ abrupt disappearance from the calendar marks another setback in a recent string of them for both the film and its controversial star. Last month, Depp was sued for allegedly assaulting location manager Greg “Rocky” Brooks on the movie’s Los Angeles set. The actor has not publicly commented on the lawsuit.

Depp has also recently been embroiled in high-profile legal disputes with his former business managers and former lawyers, as well as two ex-bodyguards. In 2016, he settled a bitter, highly public divorce with actress Amber Heard, who accused him in court filings of physical and verbal abuse. Upon settling their divorce, they said in a joint statement, “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm.”

Depp’s appearance at San Diego Comic-Con last month to support the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, in which he plays the eponymous villain, was also met with renewed criticism of his casting, due to Heard’s allegations.
Bummer! I was looking forward to this fim, but there hadn't been enough promo, anyway. Maybe it will get released at a better time down the road. Wasn't it Finding Neverland that sat on the shelf for a year, hurting its Oscar chances?

Wow, what happened?? :-|

Oh, I get it! The assault suit and the tendency of lawyers to be very, very, very cautious.

Who knows? But EW published without getting comment from Johnny's people, the director or studio, but blamed Johnny, of course.

That lawsuit brought by Rocky (tough name for a wimpy- sounding guy) is ongoing, so probably difficult to promote without dredging up bad publicity when Johnny seems to be on an upswing with the #JohnnyIsInnocent movement.

Or, maybe Johnny's people don't want to take a chance on him getting a bad review or a flop before Fantastic Beasts comes out in November? Johnny is an executive producer, so maybe he could get it put on hold. Then, if FB does well, they can release City of Lies after that to possbly get better reviews and interest in the happy aftermath.

Well, that is certainly a big disappointment! :banghead2: After reading the book LAbyrinth I think this role could be really good for Johnny's career.

Due to the nature of the storyline, this may have nothing to do with Johnny. Could be certain parties involved in the real story may have stopped it. :perplexed:

Or it could be the assault lawsuit. The guy is suing everyone involved in the production including the studio. Could be his lawyers want a portion of the box office to settle. :perplexed2:

Or it could be Hollywood as usual. Maybe the studio wants to move another movie into that slot and position this one closer to awards season. :perplexed3:

So we don't know exactly why it's been pulled I guess, but I glimpsed an article from maybe the Hollywood Reporter that seemed to assume it was due to Johnny's own 'bad publicity'. I didn't realize this Rocky person was suing not just Johnny, but the entire production? How did they end up with a location manager that lawsuit happy anyway?? And didn't this guy wait like 14 months after the supposed incident to sue Johnny? It sure seems like he may have been contacted by TMG and encouraged to go ahead with the suit when he did, which also coincided with that RS article coming out, which also seems like it was paid for by TMG or something along those lines. It all seems pretty fishy and unfair to me. I was just getting psyched up for this movie after watching the trailer and Brad Furman interview the other day. Guess we'll see it when we see it.

Whilst very disappointed as I am really looking forward to seeing it - this does make total sense. They cannot promote the film with the lawsuit hanging over them without inviting bad publicity - in one of the articles it says they hope to still release this year. It would make sense to do so once the law suit is settled (because one way or another it will be) and FB has come out. Although frustrating, from a PR point of view the best things that could happen now would be for this and the body guards law suits to be settled - hopefully good news over the Sun lawsuit and then having settled with TMG it would seem logical the case again Bloom should also be solve-able.

I wish somebody behind the City of Lies would make a statement as to 'why' it was pulled back. As it is now it's a free for all, and literally a blanco check for the tabloids to blame Johnny all they possibly can :smh:

I also think that the publication of the film has been postponed because the complaint must first be removed.
Our whole family is looking forward to the movie, but it is wise to wait. :chill:

Another take on this mess but with a few new points and less rehash of old news: seems the focus of the lawsuit has been narrowed, and a thought in the comments section about the possibility of a countersuit from Johnny’s side. Have to admit, I’ve wondered why the latter hasn’t been done yet. Maybe just the threat of such a move in potential settlement negotiations might cow that locations manager into reality; maybe not since it seems pretty obvious he’s got some pretty deep pockets egging him forward.

Just thinking aloud here, really. So very disappointed to lose this film for September, maybe permanently on the big screen. The ramifications for Johnny’s film career are seemingly becoming more and more ominous. More than anything, I hope Johnny has trustworthy people around him now.

It is very strange, all these plaintiffs have money to employ expensive and good lawyers.
The media are constantly being served with crazy news.
But I believe Johnny and think that everything will be fine. He is intelligent and will find the right way.
