Or it could be the assault lawsuit. The guy is suing everyone involved in the production including the studio. Could be his lawyers want a portion of the box office to settle. :perplexed2:

Or it could be Hollywood as usual. Maybe the studio wants to move another movie into that slot and position this one closer to awards season. :perplexed3:
I totally agree with Snoopy that this has nothing to do with Johnny personally but the tabloids will certainly run wild with it. :banghead2: Most of the public knows nothing about Johnnys personal life they like him as an actor or they don't. :smh:

CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates

You are so right - most people won't know the film is coming out until the pre-release publicity and they won't know this has happened.

On the question of expensive lawyers - in cases like this the complainant doesn't need them. Lawyers will work on a percentage of settlement which is why the drum up publicity because very often, for the defendants it is cheaper to settle that pursue the case in court (which also generates more publicity for longer).

I haven't read any of the news on this since this morning - but having reflected during the day it makes total sense to me to postpone. I also hadn't realised that this is a very important release for Global Road (is that their name)?

Did we really want this film drowned out by negative nonsense and leave a nasty aftertaste leading up to Fantastic Beasts?

Could be. Maybe it's even political, as the film suggests a strong distrust of the LAPD. At least at that time. But I'm hoping the studio has just decided to wait for a more opportune moment, as has also been suggested.
The first article mentioning the pull that I saw but didn't read all the way mentioned something about Johnny's "creepy" Comicon speech, as if that's more evidence of his supposedly sinister nature, and part of the reason "City" isn't coming out in September. Seems like there's still plenty of "media" outlets still trying to trash Johnny in any way they can. They kind of remind me of a guy Johnny played on Funny Or Die, in their aggressive slandering coupled with complete lack of concern for the truth.

Or maybe just a boring old commercial dispute - nothing at all to do with JD!

Thank you Ade, for the helpful explanation.
Maybe we have to wait and everything will be fine. :chill:

Coincidence? Approx the same day that the press rushed to print that City of Lies had been pulled, Sherilyn Fenn ( sherriisme instagram) posted a picture of Tupac Shakur alongside a short poem he wrote about turning to God when feeling abandoned and alone.

On the other hand, it seems kind of risky for Johnny to star in a film calling LA police corrupt liars at a time when he may have to rely on their testimony in his lawsuit against the Sun and any future battles with Scamber. Also, isn't the City Of Lies security person Rocky said he made accompany him because he was scared of JD an off- duty LA cop?

New statement:

In response to the lawsuit, Depp’s attorney tells PEOPLE “all of the claims made by the location manager are absurd. We will prove that as we fight this case.”

The corruption in the department took place many, many years ago.

There is a police report from that night that should be able to stand on its own.

Thank you for that, Sweeney. I wonder if Johnny has a different legal team for each of these lawsuits(!)? Also, they might want to start seriously considering beefing up the PR end since their bits are what, unfortunately, are seized upon and remembered. No spin, just truth and word-perfect facts - hard, fast, consistent and unrelenting as opposed to a reliance on fan sites to do their work for them.

Another twist reported by Deadline in the link I posted earlier is concerning, I think. Not sure what to make of it (perhaps Johnny is filing a countersuit?), but it may have had some play in the decision released today to pull the film:
The July 9-filed lawsuit has become more focused in recent days. Last week, (Miriam) Segal (producer) and her Good Film were dropped by Brooks as defendants. We hear the move was not the result of a settlement, but rather discussions between the lawyers for the parties.”

Two good points, nebraska. Unbelievably, the timing factor seems to have been lost on many observers, including some “media” hacks. And your second comment is one of the few times I’ve heard anyone mention what would seem to be a given: the existence of at least one police report. The supposed incident occurred at night on a movie set - there must have been several cops as well as security personnel all over the place. Trouble is, even if the whole thing is debunked as what it appears to have been - a staged event by a pack of ruthless, amoral and determined cowards for the sole purpose of further impugning Johnny’s professional and personal reputation - it all feeds into that superficial, Cliff’s Notes “portrait” of Johnny Depp most people reference in their heads when they’re deciding whether they “like him” enough to go see his films.

If Ade is right - and I don't see, why you shouldn't be  - then I wish, that the Good Films, Johnny worked for, would be good enough to send a statement to the press, and tell everybody, that the postponing of the movie has to do with that court case, and so is not Johnny's fault in any way!
Why leave him out there for all to pick on ...
Not that such a statement would stop all tabloids from blaming Johnny. But it might help with the more serious minded news outlets - I hope

Well said, meeps, especially your last comment. I don’t understand it at all! Guess that’s the bottom line - we really know very little about any of these cases except the one constant: someone we care so much about has been, and continues to be, maligned day in and day out with impunity.

Thanks
I have unfortunately just read an article, which was mostly about Johnny's jokes about fighting a chupacabra, and now there's one among the Fantastic Beasts, but ended with telling us about AH's allegations and Rocky's allegations  The website promised - or threatened- to mention those accusations to every article having to do with Johnny, so we won't forget the abuse going on in Hollywood ...
To be fair Johnny isn't the only one they will treat that way. But isn't that a form of abuse too :bawl:

I see they are ignoring his own abuse allegations against her.

I remember him going on about being attacked by a chupacabra when he was in Japan doing press for Mortdecai, and I could be wrong, but I think the chupacabra was AH... :-O I know that's pure speculation that serves no real purpose, but there is some humor in picturing Johnny imagining AH that way, because it really seems like a fitting description...

"Could be" :bigwink: To quote Bugs Bunny
But I have read, that he just had a cold the day before and didn't show up, when he should. And then he tried to make a bit of fun out of his apology for that :smiliewithhearts:
