Finally some good news

Cannes: Sweet Charm Pictures Acquires Johnny Depp's 'City of Lies' for China (Exclusive)
4:35 AM PDT 5/9/2018 by Patrick Brzeski The Hollywood Reporter

The Beijing-based acquired the Tupac thriller from Lionsgate on the opening day of the Marche du Film in Cannes.

Newly established Beijing-based film company Sweet Charm Pictures has acquired all Chinese rights to Johnny Depp's Tupac thriller City of Lies (formerly known as LAbyrinth).

Sweet Charm acquired the film from Lionsgate on the opening day of the Marche du Film in Cannes. Global Road Entertainment is releasing City of Lies in North America on Sept. 7. Sweet Charm says it will target a wide day-and-date release for China.

Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Infiltrator) directs the film, in which Depp stars as disgraced L.A.P.D. detective Russell Poole, whose biggest case — the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. — remains unsolved. The title is produced by Miriam Segal's Good Films.

We're tremendously excited to be bringing this thrilling film to China," said Sweet Charms founder and CEO Yoyo Qu. "Johnny remains one of China's favorite Hollywood stars and we're confident the market will will embrace Brad Furman's captivating telling of this important story."

Sweet Charm, established in March, is a film financing and acquisitions company that specializes in bringing premium international content to China. The company also has acquired the digital rights to City of Lies and plans to resell them to China's streaming video giants.

And so begins the bashing...All reports are citing the same Page Six article, but People put the director's rebuttal up front.

Johnny Depp Attacked Crew Member, Report Claims — But Director Defends Him as 'Professional'

MARIA PASQUINI May 07, 2018 03:09 PM

Johnny Depp attacked a crew member on the set his upcoming movie, a new report claims, but his director is standing by the actor’s side.

While filming LAbyrinth, a movie about the deaths of Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG, the 54-year-old actor allegedly got into a physical altercation with a location manager, according a new report by Page Six.

Director Brad Furman responded to Page Six with a statement, calling the alleged incident “exaggerated” and Depp “a consummate professional, great collaborator and a supporter of other artists”

“He always treats the crew and people around him with the utmost respect,” Furman continued. “Movies can be stressful, and nonevents often become exaggerated. We all love stories — there isn’t one here.”

Depp’s reps have not provided comment to PEOPLE.

According to Page Six, its sources say Depp tried to punch the crew member in the ribs after being told he had to stop filming. One source allegedly claims the actor had been “smoking and drinking all day on set.”

Last week, two of the actor’s former bodyguards — Eugene Arreola, a retired police detective, and Miguel Sanchez — sued the Oscar nominee for unpaid wages and forcing them to work in dangerous conditions, which they said included exposure to “illegal substances” and loaded weapons, according to a complaint they filed on May 1.

Once Arreola and Sanchez started working for Depp directly in 2016, they claim they noticed their paychecks were missing “overtime and rest pay.” They also claim that from 2016 to 2018, they did not receive overtime pay or “meal and rest breaks as mandated by law” and were “misclassified as independent contractors when they were clearly hired as employees.”

They went on to claim they were made to work as de facto babysitters for Depp’s minor child and were also “forced to protect [Depp] from himself.”

The actor is also currently embroiled in a $25 million lawsuit with his former business managers, whom he claims mismanaged the $650 million he’s made in the last two decades to the point of depletion. His former managers claim in response that the actor’s allegedly extravagant spending is to blame for his financial woes.

They clearly timed this story to hurt the movie at Cannes, but looks like didn't work.

I am, however, very, very excited to hear that Labyrinth, under the new name of "City of Lies" will be distributed in China, and under its original name opening in the US in early September.

Ignore the crap, focus on the positive. I do hope this is a good movie for him. BTW, there is a good book on the subject of Mr. Poole and police corruption in LA.

I like the new title. The old one kept me picturing the David Bowie movie.

I know Page Six is very pro-you-know-who so I don’t trust a thing they say. I’m glad there are professionals out there who will stand up for Johnny.
I think we are all somewhat screwy, every single one of us.

Indeed, Page Six is one of the "crap sources" we need to ignore.
They are horrible.
Looking forward to this movie, whatever the title. :agree2:
