Waiting for the Barbarians - Question #6 Torture

Very thoughtful answer, Snoopy! There isn't a lot to add. When it comes to things like war I agree torture may be unavoidable. War is hardly like a schoolyard game where the defeated team happily hands over a flag to the victor, knowing they have a chance to play again next recess period. Do ...

The Lawsuits Thread

And yet again I shake my head in bewilderment. How did he allow himself to be taken in? How did he not see any of this coming? How did she manage to maneuver herself into his life in spite of all the people surrounding Johnny who should have been protecting him? It's like a really bad B movie. :-/

Waiting for the Barbarians Question #5: The Magistrate and the Barbarian Girl

Ah, the Magistrate and the Girl! We were bound to face that subject sooner or later because it plays such a big part in the book. I don't think he wanted to abuse her. If he had wanted to take advantage of her he could have done it very early on and he did not. Even later on, when she tri...

Waiting for the Barbarians- Tidbit #11: Ciro Guerra - Director

Last night I watched Embrace of the Serpent. For a black and white film it had some really pretty scenery. I was drawn in by most of the characters as well, the characters will stay with me. But overall, I found the film hard to follow. The scenes at the mission (in both time periods) seemed out of ...

Waiting for the Barbarians Question #4 - The Magistrate

All very well said, Snoopydances! I agree with what you have written about the Magistrate. I want the main character in a book to be a "hero" and I didn't find the Magistrate to be very heroic. Left alone to manage the outpost as he saw fit, he behaved admirably, but his pacifist methods didn't work...

Waiting for the Barbarians Question 3: Setting

Disturbing to read about Coetzee's experiences with the police. When I read the book, I pictured something like Turkey, where there are dry plateaus, mountains, lakes, and ruins, but of course as a fantasy land, more exaggerated than in real life. :bluewave: Good to see you here! Yes, in the end it...

Waiting for the Barbarians Question 3: Setting

I envisioned the Southwest United States -- Utah/Arizona/New Mexico. The dessert areas and mesas and mountainous areas in that region. That probably had a lot to do with who I thought the Magistrate and Joll and the Barbarians were, the way I interpreted the story, and I so I placed it in a logical ...

Waiting for the Barbarians Question 2: What do you think about the casting choices?

I am not worried about Johnny being cast as bad guys. His character in the Professor was comic and romantic and lovely. His character in City of Lies is a honest real-life hero. There is also Minamata on the horizon and his character in that story is wonderfully heroic also. I think he will continue...

Waiting for the Barbarians Question 2: What do you think about the casting choices?

I rarely go to the cinema, and when I do go it is to see Johnny. I had to look up Pattinson's career to realize I have seen him in a Harry Potter movie, so obviously he didn't make a big impression on me. I am not familiar with Rylance at all. Johnny will be wonderful as Joll. He portrays evil chara...

Isn't it interesting (and wonderful) what a different approach we take. As my uncle once told me, if we are both alike one of us isn't necessary.

Re: WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS Updates, Reviews and Discussion

Great news about another festival showing! We don't know yet how faithful the film will be to the book, but can fireflydances or anyone else who's read the book guess at screen time JD's character will have? I don't want to read the book until after I've seen the film , but will love to read the th...

Question 1: Thoughts on next week's premiere

I always want to see Johnny's work. He creates something unique and wonderful every time he appears in a film. With that said, I have watched numerous movies I didn't like because I wanted to watch him perform. I expect Waiting for the Barbarians to fall into that category. There are too many ways f...
