The 2006 Teen Choice Awards, presented on August 20th in a live television broadcast, proved to be a lovefest for Johnny Depp. He swept Best Actor honors in both movie categories, capturing Choice Actor in a Drama or Action-Adventure Film for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST, and Choice Actor in a Comedy as Willy Wonka in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.
Johnny arrived onstage at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles to pick up his trophya surfboardamidst a thunderous ovation that did not cease as he leaned into the microphone. "Wow! Hellothank you so much," he greeted the audience . . . which only screamed louder in response. "This is really above and beyondthank you so, so much." Making the namaste sign to the crowd, Johnny said, "This is very, very special because it comes from you guys. Bless you."
DEAD MANS CHEST collected plenty of swag at the Teen Choice Awards. Some of the categories were quite whimsical: Choice Sleazebag, for example, went to Bill Nighy's tentacle-faced Davy Jones, while Keira Knightley was honored for Choice Scream and Choice Hissy Fit, and Orlando Bloom received the Choice Hottie and Choice Rumble awards. As for the billion-dollar box-office blockbuster itself, DEAD MANS CHEST won Choice Action-Adventure Movie and Choice Summer Movie, Action-Adventure. When Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom came to the podium together to accept the surfboard for DEAD MAN'S CHEST, the audience cheered and squealed in a prolonged, deafening roar of approval. "It's amazing to be part of a film that has had such a huge response, and the fact that you seemed to love it is all the reward we need," said Orlando. Added Johnny, "I didn't hear a word he said, but I agree . . . this is really just incredible. Thank you very much!"
Many thanks to Bonnie, AnaMaria and Carasun for sharing pictures from the telecast; it's a pleasure to see Johnny relaxed, happy, and having fun with the audience.
