Often our newest Zoners have questions about how to do things on the forums--how the quote features work, how to embed a link or a picture, how to get a personalized avatar, etc. We invite them to post their questions on this thread, and we'll try to get some answers.

Hi pt poet!
I am a newbie and in fact I do have some questions. To be honest I did not have the time to read all the rules but I have two major questions:
1. As I notice, I cannot open new topics yet. Is there a number of minimum posts required before I can open threads or is it a matter of membership timeframe? 2. I read the note about hotlinking. I am also registered on jd.org and they have the same policy, I think. But I haven't quite understood it. So say I find a cute pic of Johnny on google. I cannot copy the url and post it here right? Is that hotlinking? So what am I supposed to do. I have no photobucket. I usually upload my pics on flickr or facebook.
Thanks.

Hi Cheval-Blanc,
I realize reading all rules & guidelines takes some effort, but it's really recommended because both questions you ask are perfectly explained in there. It will also prevent you from more confusion. If you take the time, just once, to read the 'Please Read' (wat's in a name ) forum, , you will find your way more easily, ever from that moment on. There are some very helpful tutorials in that forum too.
The hotlinking issue is explained at the top of the rules (but please read the other rules too )

No, you can't, that is hotlinking. You have to get yourself a Photobucket (or other photosharing) account. From there you can post pictures on the Zone. One of the tutorials in the Please Read forum is a step-by-step help to post pictures.
About being unable to start a new thread : new members are invited to actually read some of the threads and become familiair with the Zone's posting style first. You can start a new thread in FanFic, FanFic Feedback, FanArt and Questions & Suggestions however.
I hope this helps

I'm not a newbie, but I've always wondered how you resize pictures. I had to get another zoner to fix my avatar, and I am reluctant to post pictures because of the size thing. If you have a 1064x2400 or whatever picture, how do you make it board sized? And how do you "clean up" watermarks?
If this isn't the kind of question you had in mind, just ignore it.

You can use several programme's to resize pictures, I often use Paint (which is usually installed on most computers). How to resize a picture with Paint: (My computer speaks Dutch so some names will be different) Right-click on your image, select Edit, or Open With and select Paint. When your image is opened in Paint, select Image, select Stretch/Slope (or whatever it's called in English -> this is what it looks like on my computer: )
Make sure to choose the same percentage for horizontally and vertically (e.g. 50%) and click OK (don't worry, you can always undo (in the Edit menu) your last action and try again). Experiment untill you have the size you want. You can check the width & height by selecting Properties in the same menu. If you leave Paint you will be asked if you want to save the changes. Click Yes and there you are.
- Hope this helps. Please ask if it's not clear, I'd be happy to help you -
Cleaning up pics from writing... ah.. that is a matter of time and patience. You can't really remove writing from a picture, but you can copy & paste small other parts over the writing. I use Paint as well (copy part of a picture by the select option in the menu-bar on the left side) and some other Photoshop programme's (like Ulead Photo Express) to remove scratches/lines. It just takes a lot of experimenting and practicing.

The other option of course is that you can resize your pics in your photobucket now if you use one.

Hello, I'm pretty much new here and was interested by the Fan Art posts, and I was just wondering about posting in artwork, if you do not own a scanner, would it be possible to take a photo of the work that you want to publish, or would that be too low quality?

Sure, you can post a photo of your artwork, Skarlett. We've had artists do that before. With a decent digital camera and a little bit of care, you can take a very nice picture that shows off your work!

Thanks very much I'll have a go at posting as soon as I make a photobucket account.

Hello! I'm fairly new to the board....and I was trying to access the Video archives. It kept telling me to enter my id and password....I couldn't get in. What I was looking for was a downloadable version of when Johnny was on the David Letterman Show last year - June 25, 2009. I was in the crowd outside and had a chance to meet him, but my taping of this particular show was not a good one at all. Is there a downloadable version available?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
