Chocolat Question #30 ~ Why Roux?
Why do you think Johnny chose to play Roux?

Great question, DITHOT!
I'll have to think about it, but my first thoughts are:
1. wanted to work with Lasse Halstrom (WEGG) again.
2. wanted to work with Judi Dench.
3. always wanted to be a "river rat."
4. wanted to meet Taraf de Haidouks.
5. wanted to play the guitar in a movie.
6......wanted to make me happy
It's early. I'll think more seriously about the question, really I will.

The edge … there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. HST

bluebird, let's go with #6!
I think the gypsy/outsider aspect of the character must have appealed to him and maybe working with Halstrom again. It was certainly a role that fit him like a glove!

I think it was probably the gypsy/outsider aspect. I also think that it could be that because it was a small role he could fit it in to his schedule. What other movies was he working on at the time? Blow? Lost in La Mancha?
You can't judge a book by its cover.
The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.

I'll second what's already been said, and add this...
Johnny chooses many roles where his character is an outsider... or just doesn't quite fit in with the general masses. Roux, as he's written for the film, reflects alot of characteristics that I associate with Johnny. Roux is free, he's gypsy-esque, and he's confident enough in himself to lead his life his way... not the way someone else thinks he should. So confident in fact, that he can instill confidence in others to live life for themselves, not for what they're 'supposed to be.'

I think he may have been attracted to the idea of the outsider / rover stopping after all and settling down. I think it corresponded with his own life and the life he was building. I also think that at that time he made a number of films that were filmed close by his home in France for that same reason.

Hi there, suec! Good to see you back on the board!
I had not thought about how the film was corresponding to his own life nor the proximity to France.
