Let’s discuss Vianne. What is her role in the story?

A quick answer which maybe I'll come back to: I think she starts as a catalyst, that is she speeds up a reaction that would have taken place naturally but does not necessarily take part in it. She is not changed by the reaction, but her action will only take place in very specific conditions.
Can you tell I've been helping my daughter revise her science?

Very scientific explanation, Endora!

I think she was the counterpart to Reynaud - where he stood for repression, she stood for expression. Where he stood for judgement, she stood for acceptance. Where he stood for self-denial, she stood for wonder and enjoyment. Where he stood for death, she stood for life.

Vianne - a rose amongst thorns.
I do like the catalyst analogy,
plus I agree with Lumi - she is the extreme opposite of Reynauld -she is strong and believes in herself

Some do ,and since I haven't I'm just letting everyone else have their say which seems to be what I want to say also. I agree with everyone

The mirror image analogy seems to fit here. I do believe she had her own insecurities and fears though and I think she did change a bit as the story progressed.

I agree with you ladies and I want to add to some of what DITHOT just said about Vianne's own change. I do think she is the agent of change in this storyline, but she also has an arc of change herself and wrestles with her own demons and comes to terms with some things about herself/past as well.

I agree with Vianne being a catalyst for change and also the mirror opposite of Reynauld. Except that they were alike in that they both had fears to overcome. I enjoyed being able to see the story through both of their perspectives.

It was interesting to be able to read both points of view. I actually had more sympathy for Reynaud on this reading than I did the first time around.

you pretty much have said what I wanted..
on the part of Vianne fighting her own fear I think the big difference between the two is that Vianne understands her fight while Reynaud tries to avoid them.

True, es. She tries to fight her own fears, making an effort to free herself from them, whereas Reynaud lets his fears rule his life. He is chained to them.

Vianne to me is change -- in everyone in the village and in herself. And she is the reflection counterpoint to Reynaud. In a way they feed off each other.
Love all the comments so far. Insightful, all.
