Johnny to star in "Invisible Man" reboot? Turns out, No.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Johnny Depp to Star in Universal's 'Invisible Man' Reboot
Ed Solomon ("Men In Black") is writing the script.

February 09, 2016 5:02pm PT
by Borys Kit

Johnny Depp is joining Universal’s burgeoning monster universe.

The actor has signed on to star in The Invisible Man, the studio’s latest offering being developed by producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.

It is unclear where the movie stands in terms of development. There is no director attached at this stage. The studio has a writers room with elite writers overseen by Kurtzman and Morgan who tackling reboots of the entire line of Universal’s classic monsters; sources say Ed Solomon, best known for writing Men In Black and Now You See Me, is writing Invisible Man.

Invisible Man is based on the HG Wells novel that was famously adapted into the 1933 black & white classic starring Claude Rains. Like most of Universal’s monster movies, the story is tinged with tragedy.

Rains played a chemist who uses a dangerous drug to turn invisible. The transformation leaves him jealous, paranoid and psychotic, going on a killing spree.

The movie spawned several sequels. In more recent times, Universal tried to get remakes going with David Goyer and Imagine Entertainment.

By nabbing Depp, one of the biggest stars on the planet, and already having Tom Cruise starring in its reboot of The Mummy, Universal is signaling to all its thinking big and betting big with its monster universe.

Johnny Depp to Star as ‘Invisible Man’ For Universal

February 9, 2016 | 05:12PM PT

Variety

Johnny Depp is set to star in Universal’s reboot of “The Invisible Man,” sources tell Variety.

The film currently is without a director or writer but is part of the studio’s new classic monster universe initiative being spearheaded by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.

Based on the classic H.G. Wells novel, the original starred Claude Rains as the scientist who finds a way to become invisible for devious purposes.

The first film in this rebooted monster universe is “The Mummy” which stars Tom Cruise and bows in June 2017.

Morgan and Kurtzman will now look to tap a writer to pen the reboot and no timetable has been set for production. Exec V.P. Jon Mone and V.P. Jay Polidoro will oversee production on behalf of Universal.

Depp can be seen next in “Alice Through the Looking Glass” and also has “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” set to bow in summer 2017. He is also being courted to star in Paramount’s crime thriller “Triple Frontier.” He is repped by UTA.

The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

Johnny Depp To Star In ‘The Invisible Man’ At Universal

by Mike Fleming Jr
Deadline
February 9, 2016 4:50pm

EXCLUSIVE: Johnny Depp has been set to star in The Invisible Man for Universal Pictures, part of the studio’s new production initiative to reestablish the classic movie monsters that is a cornerstone legacy for the studio. That effort is being led by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, who’ll produce. Universal’s first foray into the character was a 1933 adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel that starred Claude Rains as a scientist who finds a way to become invisible. The price is his sanity. The film was directed by James Whale, the immortal who also helmed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, and it was produced by Carl Laemmle Jr, whose name, I’m pretty sure, is emblazoned on a building on the Universal lot. I could not get details on who is writing the script, or what the timing is on this picture. Kurtzman and Morgan have been hashing out the monsters universe in a writers room, but you cannot argue with the studio’s wisdom in putting those classic franchises on the slab and reanimating them.

This has been a big priority for Donna Langley, who has so far gotten going on two movies. They’ve managed a feat that Marvel Studios might envy: with Depp, they’ve now landed two of the biggest global stars in the world, after Tom Cruise was set to star in The Mummy, which Kurtzman will direct for June 9, 2017 release. The Invisible Man character is an intriguing choice with depth and franchise potential for Depp, who’s coming off a lauded performance as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass and who will next star in his other major franchises Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, coming in May, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Executive Vice President Jon Mone and Vice President Jay Polidoro will oversee production on behalf of Universal. Depp is represented by UTA and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal LaViolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman.

Sounds intriguing. :barnabas3:
No director? I wonder if Tim Burton will be called? :omg:

They both have expressed their love for the old horror movies and paid homage to them. If not this movie, then certainly one of the other "monster" flicks. :hope:

And this would be awesome for the ONBC! :yes3: :agree2: :agree:

I hope this comes to fruition -- for Johnny's sake. To be able to follow in the footsteps of Claude Rains...Johnny must be over the moon with this part!

On IMDb, the Trivia section says of the original movie (made in 1933):

Trivia
According to information given on TCM before the movie is shown, Claude Rains was also chosen for the role because he spoke with such clarity and could be easily understood. This was important since he was 'invisible' or his face was covered for almost the entire film.

Sounds right up Johnny's alley!
He has a way of huddling down under his hat and his totems. But when the camera was on him he kind of beamed Johnny out. It was striking, like one of those magic powers in those hobbit movies.

At least the critics won't be able to complain about his makeup :bigwink:

Sounds good. Looks like it's has a while before production, as no director is attached and the screenplay has not been written. Hope it's not too long.

I agree. The only bad part is that we won't be able to see him!

But :applause2: for this role!

This is really up Johnny's alley for sure. I remember seeing the Claude Rains version many years ago and I recall that it was quite a tragic story and we won't be seeing Johnny for most of the movie - a true monster story. I love SnoopyDances comment about the critics not being able to complain about his makeup this time - so true! Except I think I remember that some of the time he had something like a bandage wrapped over his head and face for some of it - so I guess technically that could be considered makeup. Anyway - I'm pleased to see something coming up in the future. Made my day!

In the original movie, Claude Rains was a typical human in the beginning and gradually disappears. Once invisible, he wears clothes, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, and bandages (on his face) so others can see him. (Think of Johnny in Dark Shadows when Barnabas was walking on the beach.)

When Claude Rains wanted to hide, he simply removed all of the garments and dissappeared.
Usually, they showed foot prints moving on the ground to keep track of him.

Will be intriguing to see how they update the special effects and how Johnny creates the character. This guy is definitely "flawed".
