Ch. 12 - What did you think of Jack's plan to rescue Shabako from the plantation?

I thought it was brilliant. Risky, but brilliant. Showed a glimpse of the future Jack. I always chuckled at the hanging scene in COTBP, when the guy was reading all of the charges against Jack....impersonating a cleric in the Church of England, etc. Then in OST, he impersonated the judge at the beginning. He was the native chief in DMC. It was a well conceived and thought out plan. Of course, with Jack's luck, I was waiting for something to go hilariously wrong.

Very cleverly done and I knew he'd get away with it!

Yes, I loved it.
What's really cool to me is how well Anne was able to capture the essence of the Jack we know from the movies and move that guy back in time so the qualities we expect are there, sometimes in their infancy, but present enough that we can always say "how typical". That's the challenge of taking an existing beloved character that is very well known to your audience and building your story, your variations, on that structure. Yes, what exists already is a good guide or a measuring stick but it isn't easy to write within 'the canon' so to speak. You've got to study your guy quite a bit, everything from gesture to dialogue to internal reflections he might make. How much of the grown man is likely to be present in the young man? It can't all be there because the Jack we know is a product of his experience.
I won't go further as then I would collide with another very large question that is bound to be asked in the future.

I thought Ann captured all of their personalities quite well. And I'll leave the rest for said future question.

His smile always make me when that charge is read. Oh, to know what he did! The mind wanders........

Thanks everyone for your patience! I could just see Jack in this scene, it was a perfect scenario for him. Well done!!

I think in this scene Ann captured the wit and clever mind of Jack. Of course we see that because of the POTC films. But really showed the personalty of the Capt. I too smile when I think of his mischievous ways.

I had such fun writing the scene where Jack ate dinner with the plantation owner and his family, bragging about his exploits on the hunting field. I actually giggled out loud a few times, I had so much fun. -Ann

I thought it was clever and daring, he knew enough about the society to make it work. It fit with the style of Jack as we know him from Curse of the Black Pearl.
