It looks like there will be a new edition of The Rum Diary, the novel, released as a tie-in to the film and it will include a foreward by Johnny. I found this interesting German bit (machine translation):
Quote:
Hunter S. Thompson The Rum Diary
€ 15,00
In Stock Blumenbar 2010, 300 pages Translation from the American by Wolfgang Farkas ISBN: 978-3-936738-69-8
Special edition of the film start
New York, 1959. Paul Kemp, thirty, flies at night in winter to San Juan and there occurs a job as a reporter. In those days before Castro and Kennedy, before Vietnam and Flower Power, Puerto Rico is a tropical paradise that is now being discovered by American investors. Soon Kemp's new life in the Caribbean on a wild journey to the limits of its power, with the sun, rum, naked girls and the idea of impending doom.
The long-lost first novel by Hunter S. Thompson tells the story of the end of the innocence of America and by the end of a youth. Start the film of "Rum Diary" with Johnny Depp in the lead role of these classics will appear in a special issue.
It's listed as being in stock, released in March 2010. hmmmm. I couldn't find any reference to it in the usual places in the U.S. but Amazon UK has it, still in German. Amazon UK also shows a September release of the paperback version also in German:
I wonder if the hardcover art ties in with the film's promotional graphics or if it's just the publisher's illustration. I'm assuming this version with JD's foreward will be released in English once a domestic distributor is found and a release date is established.

I hope we get that book reissue here...not that I don't already have a copy, of course, but I want Johnny's intro for the Zone's ByJohnny Archives.
Thanks for the info, FAN!

That seems to be the case when books are issued around the time the movie shows up, Chocolat comes to mind.

Just now I received my copy of the German issue from Amazon.com. It has an 8-pages afterword by Johnny: it's the exact translation of his introduction to GONZO, The Life of HUNTER S. THOMPSON, from 2007. (Johnny's beautifully written text, beginning with “Buy the ticket, take the ride.” ) It's in the JDZ Archives:
There's no special attention to the upcoming movie in the book, only one line on the back cover "Filming with Johnny Depp in major role". A scan of the back cover: (the line from Johnny means: "He lived and breathed his writing, 24 hours a day". Other lines are short reviews and summary)
Front cover:
The book contains several letters by Thompson: "Sources of the next letters are: The Proud Highway: Saga of a desperate Southern Gentleman, 1955-1967, and Fear and Loathing in America: The Brutal Odyssey of an Outlaw Journalist, 1968-1976. This collection is based on the publication history of Rum Diary. The idea to film the book arised in 1961, and 40 years later Hunter had not given up ..."
There's also a short dedication poem on the book's first pages:

AnaMaria, thanks for the scans and the info on the book. I like that some of Hunter's letters that relate to the book are included. That intro poem is also in my copy of TRD and we did a tidbit on Dark Eileen O'Connell. If you're interested in learning more about her and the poem, here is the link.

AnaMaria, thanks for making the investment in the book for all of us. I sincerely appreciate it. I'm sorry that it is nothing new.

I went to the library today to try to find a copy of The Rum Diary to reread. I haven't read it in about 3 years. Much to my surprise, I found an unabridged version in the Books On CD section. So I checked it out, and will listen on the way to and from work. The reader is called Christopher Lane. Wish it was Johnny. Sigh.

Jennak, I love audiobooks. And this one would have been great if read by Johnny.
Let us know how it is.

Will do! I hope the narrator doesn't spoil the story.
