I have to agree with those who thought it didn't fit. It seemed a bit disjointed to me.
You can't judge a book by its cover.

The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.

I've been thinking about this and trying to figure out why it seemed disjointed. They employees of the newspaper up to this point had seemed like their unhappiness was just grumbling, then go have some rum and it passes until the next day. I think it was a surprise to me that they would actually take any action other than going to Al's and complaining.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -
Wow! What a ride!
