You're right--it's not like a mystery from 80 or 120 years ago. But neither are most of today's mysteries.

The last 3 I read were murder mysteries. In all of them there was a murder in the beginning. It was up to the protagonist (who wasn't always a detective, but was the star of a series) to determine whodunit.
You can't judge a book by its cover.

The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.
