PW Question #4 ~ Sharing Quotes

Unread postby Liz » Thu Feb 26, 2009 11:42 am

Theresa & fansmom posted a couple of appropriate quotes yesterday on the Question #2 thread. Can you think of some quotes or poems that are relevant to this discussion? Here’s one I found accidentally last week. They seem to find me. :-O

"If you need to visualize the soul, think of it as a cross between a wolf howl, a photon, and a dribble of dark molasses. But what it really is, as near as I can tell, is a packet of information. It's a program, a piece of hyperspatial software designed explicitly to interface with the Mystery. Not a mystery, mind you, the Mystery. The one that can never be solved. Data in our psychic program is often nonlinear, nonhierarchical, archaic, alive, and teeming with paradox. Simply booting up is a challenge, if not for no other reason than that most of us find acknowledging the unknowable and monitoring its intrusions upon the familiar and mundane more than a little embarrassing. More immediately, by waxing soulful you will have granted yourself the possibility of ecstatic participation in what the ancients considered a divinely animated universe. And on a day to day basis, folks, it doesn't get any better than that." ~ Tom Robbins
You can't judge a book by its cover.

The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.

From Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" --

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

and

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to space.

Got a question for you. :perplexed: Today's question about quotes -- is this where we put quotes from PW, too? Or will there be another question about that later?

Thanks for asking, theresa. A separate question about quotes form the book is coming very soon!

Let me add this quote by Stephen Hawking:

“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -
Wow! What a ride!

Thanks for the clarification, DITHOT. I tend to have a rather irreverent view of all these theories, so my contributions tend to be a bit on the light side.

From one of my favorite cartoonists -- this one's for you, DITHOT!

Thanks, theresa! Love, love, love Gary Larson. But of course you and I already knew that was the reason, right?

You ladies are on a roll...
Here are some Albert Einstein quotes I found.
“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.”
The second describes me and Parellel Worlds.
“If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough”
edit to add another just because I like it.

Ok this can be habit forming.

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.
Carl Sagan

The universe is an intelligence test.
Timothy Leary

If we long to believe that the stars rise and set for us, that we are the reason there is a Universe, does science do us a disservice in deflating our conceits?
Carl Sagan

Sometime I think we are alone in the universe and sometimes I think we are not. In either case I think the idea is quite staggering.
Andrew Jackson

You will always exist in the universe in one form or another.
Shunryu Suruki

Habit forming, for sure, gemini. But I don't think I would relate to them in quite the same way if I had not read the book. Every one is just a treat to read. :thanks!:
