Monday Night Thread - 5 Lists of 5

Unread postby Liz » Mon Oct 17, 2005 7:09 pm

Good afternoon/evening/whatever, Noodlemantra’s. Welcome to the first ONBC Monday Night Thread. As you know, we’ve moved from Sunday to Monday. :snoopydances:

Due to an outstanding suggestion by Sands , our topic for this week’s Monday Night Thread is Your Top 5. What are your:

TOP 5 FAVOURITE DEPP MOVIES
TOP 5 FAVOURITE NOVELS
TOP 5 FAVOURITE PLACES
TOP 5 FAVOURITE SONGS
TOP 5 FAVOURITE FOODS
?

NOTE: Next week's question will be a list question again inspired by our current author, Nick Hornby. I’m giving you a whole week to think about this question because, believe me, you will need it. As you know, he’s written a book entitled, 31 Songs, which he refers to as “a soundtrack to accompany life”. So next week’s question is:

List the 31 Songs that illustrate the soundtrack that has accompanied your life, giving the reasons if you so desire.
You can't judge a book by its cover.

The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.

Okay, here goes what I have so far -

Top 5 novels:
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
A Prayer for Owen Meany - John Irving
A Christmas Memory - Truman Capote (not really a novel, but a huge piece of writing in my estimation)
Prince of Tides - Pat Conroy
The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings Trilogy - JRR Tolkein (Well, you can't very well pick just one, can you?)

Top 5 places:
Tuscany, Italy (various places there)
The once (and, I hope, future) New Orleans
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Port Antonio, Jamaica
My parents' house where I grew up, especially in springtime

Top 5 Depp movies (and I haven't seen them all yet):
Pirates of the Caribbean
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Finding Neverland
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Benny & Joon

I'm still thinking about the songs and the food. Back later.

And, Liz, thanks for the advance warning about next week's question! Wow! That's an amazing one - with much to ponder! (At least for us really old folks! )

Slammerkin- Emma Donoghue :-? KY, You've probably mentioned this right here on ONBC, and I've forgotten.

Curry's one of my favs., but not top 5. It's hard to keep to 5, isn't it? :banghead:

I've had a week to think about it, and I still keep changing them. I think 5 is easier than 31. :banghead:

This is really interesting reading everyone's choices.

This is a fun topic! Here are my lists:

Depp Movies:
1. Pirates of the Caribbean
2. What's Eating Gilbert Grape
3. Finding Neverland
4. Benny & Joon
5. Sleepy Hollow

Novels:
I'm going to cheat a little here because it's way too hard for me to list only five! I will say that my favorite novel is definitely The Lord of the Rings by: J.R.R. Tolkien.

Places:
1. Los Angeles
2. Orlando
3. St. Louis
4. Paris (I have never been there, but I would love to visit there someday!)
5. London (again, I have never been here, but I would like to go there someday).

Songs (Temporary):
(My favorite songs literally change every week, so here are my five favorite songs at the moment):
1. My Father's Gun-Elton John
2. Learning to Fly-Tom Petty (the first two songs I listed were both in Elizabethtown, which I loved, and that's why they're currently in my top 5!)
3. Speed of Sound-Coldplay
4. Vertigo-U2
5. Pourtant-Vanessa Paradis

Foods:
1. Pizza
2. Pasta
3. Shrimp
4. Cookies
5. Coffee (I guess this doesn't actually count as a food, but I'm a coffee addict, so I have to put it here!)

Top 5 songs:
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
Song for You - Leon Russell
Blue - Joni Mitchell
San Francisco Bay Blues - Richie Havens (I'm not sure that is the name of the song, but some of you know which one I mean)
Wooden Ships - Jefferson Airplane

Top 5 foods (if you are a vegetarian or healthy eater, don't read this list!:
Barbecued chicken made by my dad
shrimp creole
chicken fried steak
beef stroganoff
fried okra

Liz, I started to respond about my Jamaica experiences, but realized it is something to email you about rather than waste everyone's time on. So I'll be in touch - and maybe we can talk ourselves into a trip back there to check it out!
