A bit OT: Gaiman on Rogue's Gallery

Another small world event...Neil Gaiman commented on the new sea shanty CD, Rogue's Gallery.

It's been a long time since I raved about a CD here, but ROGUE'S GALLERY is perfectly wonderful -- a sort of side Johnny Depp-Gore Verbinski spin-off project generated during the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean. A Hall Willner double CD of sea shanties... you can read about it at http://billboard.com/bbcom/news/article ... 1002691275
and it's brilliant. Much better than I had even hoped on reading the good review. (Don't buy it if you're easily offended, as the Loudon Wainright III version of Good Ship Venus is filthier than any I've ever encountered before. And it's not that there are any clean versions of that song.) I like the way it trashes genres. It's a folk album and a rock album and a punk album. The songs are, for the most part, amazing. And everyone sounds like they're having fun. Even Lou Reed.

:-O A small world indeed. I think we need a Twilight Zone emoticon. Thanks for sharing, neophyte! If anyone would like to give their review of the cd, let us know. Sounds like we should refrain from posting lyrics though...

I've been thinking that for a while now, DITHOT. I'll take that on as something to investigate.

Amazing, Neophyte! Thanks for sharing that little tidbit.

Thanks Neophyte!

After finding Neil's site a few weeks ago via a bird blog (I know weird connection) I have forgotten to check it regularly.

But I did buy the Rogue CD right away and I really love it and have been playing in almost exclusively.

There are a few songs with explicit lyrics and if you really want to see what the Good Ship Venus is like you can google the lyrics and find all the limericks attributed to the song. The bad thing is that song has a really catchy tune and you will find yourself sing it....

The two cd set is real, gritty, and fantastic. I love the real songs and can easily imagine them sung by sailors and pirates.
There are a few romantic sweet songs but not many and you will be wise to listen to the samples on Amazon.

And the best part is that there is a Rogues II coming out next summer.

Also if you love the cover art and would like to order it you can get Howard Pyle's art in poster form from the Delaware Art Museum. There is a great story and picture about the Flying Dutchman that will sound and look very familiar to a certain movie we have been enjoying.
