JP Donleavy and the History of the Ginger Man

Unread postby suec » Sun Oct 29, 2006 12:40 pm

A programme is being broadcast on Radio 4 in the UK on Thursday 2 November at 11.30, repeated on Sunday at 12.15 am.

'A celebration of the life and work of the author JP Donleavy, still active at the age of 80 with 24 novels to his credit and further works planned. His best-known novel, The Ginger Man, is about to become a film starring Johnny Depp. He's also a playwright and an artist whose 15th art exhibition was held in Dublin this year. Polly Feversham visits him at his rural retreat. She also hears from friends such as Billy Connolly, Shane McGowan, Professor terence Brown of Trinity College, Dublin, and Donleavy's archivist Bill Dunn.'
"Luck... inspiration... both only really happen to you when you empty your heart of ambition, purpose, and plan; when you give yourself, completely, to the golden, fate-filled moment."

Hi, suec! Good to have you back! :welcome:
Is this radio show accessible online for those of us not in the UK? It sounds like a great program!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -
Wow! What a ride!

Thanks, Suec, for the heads up on this. I hope I can fit in. I'd love to listen to it.
You can't judge a book by its cover.

The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.

Would this be a program that the station would keep in its archives so we could log on at any time and hear it? Our NPR radio does that.

I'm not sure liz. I always think of EST as being 5 hours ahead but then the clocks changing throws me. We have ended Summer Time and put ours back an hour.

I just put the show time in at the World Clock. I used London and Miami and it said
At the specified time, local time in Miami was 5 hours behind London

Location Local time Time zone
London (U.K. - England) Monday, October 2, 2006 at 11:30:00 PM UTC+1 hour BST
Miami (U.S.A. - Florida) Monday, October 2, 2006 at 6:30:00 PM UTC-4 hours EDT
Corresponding UTC (GMT) Monday, October 2, 2006 at 22:30:00

This has me confused. Anyone better at time zones then me?
Thanks GG for the link to the radio station.

Ok, After doing this twice with the same results it finally dawned on me what the problem was. I assumed the program was 11:30 PM and it seems it is AM. I don't know why I thought it was on at night. DUH? Anyhow 6:30 AM seems to be the time here. Now I wonder how long it is because I have to be at an apointment at 8:00.
