First of all, thanks for making me read this poem. Read it in a Dutch translation, easier to 'feel' the words.

( for the dutchies among us: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v148/Chero/Depp/Desiderata.jpg )

These first lines, related to Johnny, intensively remind me of Paperrose's encounter with him on the Actor's Fund Gala. Johnny (and she) were in a terrible crowd of autograph-hunters. She described him as the calm, serene factor within that chaos, automatically signing, untill he discovered her as a sincere fan, paying attention to her, heard her talk within all that noise, listening to her, creating a peaceful, little place for her and him at that moment.
(I don't consider Paperrose as one of the 'dull and ignorant' of course  ...) but it looks like on those moments Johnny behaves like being inspired by this (and the following) stanza of Desiderata.

Unable to express my feelings any better , let Paperrose's pics speak for me:

That is an excellent example, AnaMaria. And thanks for the Dutch translation. I know there is at least one other here who I'm sure appreciates that.
You can't judge a book by its cover.

The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.

Ana Maria thank you for posting the translation! Great idea. Those pictures speak a thousand words. Noise and haste to be sure. I am amazed that he was able to hear Paperrose at all.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -
Wow! What a ride!

The desiderata -stanza 1

I'm with you KYW and luvdepp :disco: -the aspect of silence is what struck me first and the last part of not disparaging/making judgement calls on others, for example, because of the way they act or speak...Anamaria -that is a great picture of Johnny staying calm amongst all the chaos--That is one of his most interesting characteristics-that he is a great listener and watcher.Remember all those companionable silences he shared with Marlon Brando? :cloud9: You can communicate with someone on a very deep level just by being with them-you don't always need words

There is an entire guide for living in this stanza -- true to self, respectful of others, even those who appear to have little to offer on the surface.

I think the thing that struck me was the phrase "as far as possible without surrender." So often when we are told to get along with others, to respect other people, and so on, we take that advice to mean to sacrifice our self in the process, to give up what we are/believe in the name of peace and being "nice". I am really trying to learn a better way, and this stanza taken in its entirety is just that.
