We're getting close to Halloween, so of course it's time to watch Sleepy Hollow once again . . . the autumnal setting, the pumpkins, and the spooky Headless Horseman all combine to make it a great Halloween movie.

But what if you want a double feature for Halloween night? What other Johnny Depp movies would you recommend as especially appropriate for viewing at this time of year?

Given the nature of the season,
Edward Scissorhands would be my second choice,
since the back story to Edward lends itself well to the old black
and white horror movies with Vincent Price. Mr. Price is classic
horror and, when I was growing up, a favorite to watch during October.
Also, Vincent was very near and dear to Johnny and Tim, and so fitting
to see him play Edward's "father."

Great topic Part-Time Poet!

That's an interesting choice, Chocolat--I have never thought of watching
Edward Scissorhands as a Halloween film: I always watch it in the winter, usually around Christmastime. But Vincent Price is such a part of the Halloween horror film tradition; it's a nice way to honor his memory, by viewing his final work.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Halloween has absolutely no meaning in this part of the world. We only know about it through American films and series and cartoons on Nickelodeon. Every year it sort of takes me by surprise to see you all get geared up for Halloween. To me personal it's my mother's birthday and the eve of All Hallows and All Souls two days later on which we visit the cemetery.
I always like to watch SH, I don't feel any special urges to watch horror in October. In general I think JD can act extremely scary. He's good at that. Lovely exterior with hidden dark interior.

Definately Sleepy Hollow --

I can see why some would say Edward Scissorhands, heck...most of Tim Burton's work is very Halloween-esque. I agree with part-time poet though, ES it's totally a winter/Christmas movie for me.

Don't really recognise Halloween so don't tend to watch any movies like that not even SH. But I would think The Ninth Gate should be another one.

Likewise, Anna. Many people actually quite resent it because it's seem as an Americanism forcing its way into Europen culture.

Yes, Mass on All Saints. The sort of day that makes even the resolution of the lapsed waiver.

I think "From Hell" is good for the Halloween season, it just seems to be one that fits in. . .

All Saints! In Dutch it's called Allerheiligen en Allerzielen on November 3. You have such a lovely way of saying things.

Actually Halloween is a Celtic/northern European pagan festival. It was brought to the US by the Irish.

I'd pick From Hell. But I like the suggestion of Ninth Gate.

Don't think the Celts went trick-or-treating dressed up as Elvis or Edward Scissorhands and the pumpkin isn't even indigenous to Europe. Although based on a Celtic feast, modern Halloween is very American. There's nothing wrong with your Halloween but I see my kids picking up American customs and notions through television and that does worry me as it tends to push out their own cultural heritage. It's not a matter of superiority or anything like that. Every culture is valuable and I find Halloween but also Thanksgiving for instance highly interesting. It's just not part of our cultural heritage which has been Judaic-Christian for the best part of 1500 years.

Corpse Bride seems to be a good one for Halloween!

Viewing Sleepy Hollow is a tradition with us somewhere in early October. It gets me in the spirit of the autumn season. We have also watched Corpse Bride and Secret Window. I have caught NG several times on tv during October in past years, but I haven't seen it this year.
This weekend I think we will watch ST. It will be the DDs first time seeing it - this will be fun! :fear: :hills:

On Halloween I usually put POTC COTBP on while we're eating dinner or getting dressed for tricks and treats. Pirates and skeletons definitely represents Halloween to me! :capnjack: Just having it on in the background makes me feel in the holiday spirit!!

I would hope that our European members could enter into the spirit of the discussion without judging our holiday. If you have no suggestions to offer, that's fine--you are under no obligation to take part in the discussion--but let's refrain from culture wars, please.

Halloween began here as a children's holiday, a chance for them to dress up in costume and visit their neighbors, who would cheerfully reward the children with a piece of candy for providing the entertainment of arriving in costume. It was looked forward to with great anticipation for the pleasure of donning a costume--the one time in the year when most children got to let their inner actor out, that pleasure that Johnny Depp indulges in whenever he pursues a new role.

It is only in the last 20 years or so that adults have started to dress in costume as well for Halloween, and workplaces have relaxed and often allow such an expression. It is a reminder that it is healthy for us to let that imaginative side of our nature out to play, at least one day a year. And it provides a bond to look across at the grocery store cashier or bank teller or fellow office-cubicle-worker and see, not the usual bland professional face, but a pirate or a vampire or a doctor wearing scrubs and a stethescope. We look at each other and realize that there is so much more to our fellow-travelers than our workaday world lets us see. We smile. We exchange greetings. We celebrate the human imagination and all the possibilities that lie within us. We see, however briefly, the artist we all have the potential to be, and might have been, had our lives taken a different direction.

Very few of us are lucky enough to work at jobs where, like Johnny, we get to engage our imaginative side every day. Halloween is our day to recognize the part of us that dreams and tells stories, that brings wonder and delight. So we do cherish it.
