The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum Question #23 - High School Required Reading

Unread postby Liz » Wed Mar 05, 2014 12:35 am

Why do you think this book is required reading for German high school literature class?
You can't judge a book by its cover.

The only thing that matters is the ending. It's the most important part of the story.

Maybe a couple of reasons, as a German writer Boll is part of the history, part of the culture of the country. From a literary viewpoint, the writing style is unique -- as we have pointed out, lots of word play. From a morality view ( if one is allowed to use that term in a public school without being politically incorrect ) it is certainly a cautionary tale about believing everything you read, about the power of words to wound and destroy. The old sticks and stones rhyme is not true, words do hurt.

Agreed, nebraska.

I'm hoping we'll hear from our German friends on this, as they actually had to read it for high school, I think.
