Johnny Depp Signs First-Look Deal With IM Global (Exclusive)

5:09 PM PDT 6/13/2017 by Tatiana Siegel

The company will be run by Depp and his longtime producing partner Christi Dembrowski as well as Sam Sakar and Stephen Deuters.

Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil has signed a first-look deal with Stuart Ford's IM Global.

The company will be run by Depp and his longtime producing partner Christi Dembrowski as well as Sam Sakar and Stephen Deuters.

IM Global, whose most recent credits include Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge and Martin Scorsese's Silence, is financing and co-producing Depp’s next film, Richard Says Goodbye, one of the hottest sales titles on the market at Cannes. Written and directed by Wayne Roberts, the film begins production this summer.

Infinitum Nihil previously had first-look deals at Disney and, before that, Warner Bros.

“Johnny is, of course, a globally recognized superstar but, as importantly, we at IM Global love Infinitum Nihil’s idiosyncratic and taste-driven view of the movie-making world and the unique brand that Johnny, Christi and their team have developed," Ford said. "We’re building this relationship in order to generate great movies for the global audience with a like-minded creative partner, and with IM Global’s reputation as a company that has enjoyed frequent success greenlighting bold films outside of the confines of the major studio system I feel certain that our newly extended filmmaking partnership with Infinitum Nihil will be a fruitful one.”

IM Global’s relationship with Infinitum Nihil began last year when IM Global Television announced that it was developing a music-driven TV drama series about the legendary Muscle Shoals recording studio based on Rick Hall’s autobiography The Man From Muscle Shoals: My Journey from Shame to Fame, with Infinitum Nihil producing alongside Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced.

Depp has suffered a string of misfires in recent years, including Transcendence, Mordecai and 2016's Alice Through the Looking Glass. In an effort to change things up, he moved from UTA to CAA in October (he had been with UTA since 1998).
He is currently in theaters with Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which crossed the $600 million mark worldwide.

After shooting Richard Says Goodbye, Depp will reprise his role as the Dark Wizard Grindelwald in JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel. He next stars in the crime thriller Labyrinth for Open Road as a detective who investigates the Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. murders and follows that up with Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express, directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Very interesting. I like this part "IM Global love Infinitum Nihil’s idiosyncratic and taste-driven view of the movie-making world and the unique brand that Johnny, Christi and their team have developed." There is so much left to be done, tried, experimented with, gambled on. Why not? Nothing like change to transform one's perspective and energize one's will.

I was curious what a First Look is...

What is a First-Look Deal?

BY CHARLIE SIERRA ON AUGUST 12, 2013 BUSINESS AFFAIRS, DEVELOPMENT, FEATURE FILM, FILM PRODUCING, TERMINOLOGY, TV PRODUCING

Let’s say you just directed a film that won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, or you’re an actor attached to a film that did gangbusters in the box office, or you’re the creator of a nationally syndicated TV show. You are what we call a PROVEN TALENT. The studios and TV networks need people like you to create content for them and hedge their risk in this volatile business. To do this, they will offer you a first-look deal.

This is an agreement that’s made between an above-the-line talent and a movie studio, network, TV studio or production company (for simplicity sake, let’s call this “the company”). Most A-list actors, directors, producers and writers have a first look deal. This agreement basically states that the talent must allow the company right of first refusal to produce, finance and/or distribute any of their projects. In other words, the company gets first dibs on anything the talent develops. If the company passes on the project, the talent is free to shop that project elsewhere. In return for this arrangement, the company will pay the talent and annual fee and cover all their overhead expenses to run their company. If it’s a movie studio, the company will provide office space and other amenities on the lot. Another benefit for the talent that the company will funnel all their property to them. So if the company acquires a huge property, they’ll approach their talent with overall deals first. For example, Disney owns THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and since Jerry Bruckheimer has a first look deal with them, they will go to him first to produce the film. Or when Paramount acquired Transformers, the first person up for the job was Michael Bay since he had a first look deal with the studio.

NOTE: This is different from an overall deal where anything the producer develops must stay within the studio and can’t be taken elsewhere even if they pass.

I love the description of Infinitum Nihil as being idiosyncratic.
