Terry Russio. He is a screen writer and wrote the Pirate movies and the Zorro movies (along with Ted Elliot). He did the initial script for The Lone Ranger.

OK thanks. That's who I thought everyone might be talking about, but it threw me because I didn't know he had anything to do with this movie. I knew he wrote POTC. I thought his name is Rossio, though.

I have a really dumb question. Why is there so much concern over this movie in the media? It's Gore, Jerry and Johnny, plus a whole bunch of other incredibly talented people. I understand it from a business point and the money issues. But it seems to me that the only thing needed is for Disney to let the filmmakers finish their work and then they, Disney, needs to promote it...PROPERLY. I would think the artistry would stand on it's own, like in POTC. I guess I'm just being naive.

So Terry Rossio has gone from screenwriter to sort of producer on this movie? Does that mean nothing at all was retained from the script that he wrote? Seems kind of unusual for a major screenwriter to write an entire screenplay for a movie that is not used at all, but it sounds like he's not going to be credited as one of the writers? Lastly, who is the actual screenwriter(s) again? John Logan by chance?

I don't think that the Lone Ranger is getting more media attention than some other big-budget films. It may just appear so to Johnny fans because we notice articles that mention Johnny. Of the currently in-production films, I would say World War Z (with Brad Pitt) is getting more attention for budget concerns for although it has been in production since June 2011, it is reported that it has just hired another screenwriter to change the ending and is going to have weeks of reshoots and the release has been delayed 6 months. For some reason, production and budget issues in entertainment seem to get more media coverage than other industries. I can't say why although I am one of the people who read such articles. The Lone Ranger brought attention to itself when production shut down last year for budget negotiations. It is not so surprising that people have been looking for signs of more trouble since then. John Carter was a big story which ended with the studio stating they had made a loss and the studio head resigning. Disney is going to be watched for what happens next including budget management of current and future films. The reaction to John Carter was curious to me because although I see a difference between financial failure and entertainment/artistic failure, many people don't. I have heard comments like "critics said John Carter was a flop but I liked it" and I want to reply "showbusiness reporters said it was a financial flop but that doesn't mean no-one likes the movie". Disney is a public company so their top responsibility is to the shareholders not to the film-makers. POTC COTBP had a reported budget of $140million. If the budget had been reported as closer to $200m then, I think, the perception of it's success would be quite different and we might not have got sequels.

You're right, RumLover.
This stuff happens with every movie and after watching La Mancha, it's amazing that any film gets made and released.
Plus there has to be added pressure for Disney on this one. I don't think POTC 4 lived up to its Disney expectations.

In the U.S., after POTC 2, each one made 100 thousand less than the previous one. If they want to continue making them, they need to figure out how to turn that around. And yes, everyone has a lot riding on the performance of TLR.
Based on this post made today by Ron Howard, it looks like his dad Rance is in TLR and that they are working through the weekend. I wonder if Johnny brought his kids out to be with him on set. Note, I quoted only the part of the tweet pertaining to TLR.

Thanks for that. I never realized he was Ron's father. And it is amazing how active he still is in his 80s. Also peeked on IMDB, and see he has been in a movie with Johnny before (Ed Wood).

This isn't exactly related to TLR, but we have reported on the Navajo Nation in connection with this film and Johnny's relationship that he has formed with them. So you might find this interesting. The Supreme Court has issued a ruling in favor of Native Americans which will give some relieve to many tribes including the Navajo.
Supreme Court says tribes must be fully reimbursed From Associated Press June 18, 2012 10:48 AM EDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says the government must fully reimburse Native American tribes for money they spent on federal programs.
The federal government had agreed to fully reimburse money tribes spent on programs like law enforcement, environmental protection and agricultural assistance, but Congress capped the amount of money earmarked for that reimbursement. The tribes sued, and the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver said the money must be fully reimbursed.
The high court on Monday said the Ramah Navajo Chapter and other Native American tribes must get their money back.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote the majority opinion for Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas and Elena Kagan. Chief Justice John Roberts, and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Samuel Alito dissented.

One of the Creede extras has been writing a wonderful blog about his experiences - mostly about waiting. He signed a non-disclosure agreement so can't say anything concrete about the production. His most recent post is about his brush with Johnny. It's pretty funny and quite revealing about the movie-making process. I love his descriptions (yes, plural) about how to tell Johnny apart from his double.
Quote:
My Meager Stardom — Johnny Depp June 15th, 2012 |
Johnny Depp walked by me last night.
He was walking about 10 feet away from me, dressed as Tonto.
I saw the back of his head.
Since I started working on The Lone Ranger, people have been asking me, “What is Johnny Depp REALLY like?”
He seemed pretty nice.
Johnny Depp was spotted on the set last week, but I didn’t see him then.
One person tells me that in between shooting, Johnny Depp came over and stood with the extras, making eye-contact and speaking briefly with them.
Other people present at this Depp-siting dispute that claim, saying that Johnny Depp stood with the extras with his eyes closed as he muttered lines from the script.
Johnny Depp in Rashomon.
When he’s in his Tonto wardrobe, it’s difficult to tell Johnny Depp apart from his photo-double.
A photo-double, I should explain, is a look-alike to the principal actor who is used in many scenes that don’t involve close-ups of the actor’s face.
For example, if the Lone Ranger is talking to Tonto, but we only see the back of Tonto’s head, then a photo-double may be used in place of Johnny Depp.
Or if we see a wide-shot of Tonto riding a horse across a field, then a photo-double can take the place of the principal actor.
I’m beginning to realize that the nature of the extra’s work is antithetical to the work of the principal actor. Extras are hired to be in the background in wide shots, while principal actors are hired for their work in close-up shots.
The extras and the principal actors often inhabit two separate worlds and (thanks to the photo-double) only a small number of scenes require both extras and principals.
Because of the work of our makeup artists, it’s not always easy to tell Johnny Depp’s Tonto from photo-double Tonto.
The cognoscenti tell me that Johnny Depp’s Tonto twitches his nose (a mannerism his photo-double does not employ since his face is never seen close-up). Also Johnny Depp’s Tonto has a more defined jaw-line.
Those less discerning have noted that the Johnny Depp’s Tonto is always escorted by a large group of people, whereas the photo-double Tonto walks the set by himself.
The Tonto who walked past me was accompanied by a large team of assistants, ergo it was really Johnny Depp. My brush with greatness.
——————–
This evening as the bus delivered us to the set, there was a small group of devoted Johnny Depp fans waiting outside the gate. They held aloft a poster of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
And even though it was obvious that Johnny Depp would not be arriving on a school bus filled with Asians, they waved and cheered for us as we entered the set.
And for a moment, we felt famous by association.
