Re: The Thin Man Question #1 ~ Nick and Nora

I think "yin/yang" describes it perfectly. Nora is young, wealthy, sheltered, and Nick is umm, not any of those.

Old map of Westchester County, Liz? North Tarrytown changed its name to Sleepy Hollow a few years ago. :bigwink:

Re: The Thin Man Tidbit #14 - How to test your urine

I had made the rash assumption that the title of the book was meant as a joke, an exaggeration, a self-help book no one would want. Silly me.

Re: The Thin Man Tidbit #4 ~ Asta

Well, and I'm so accustomed to Asta being male in the movies that I was astonished to learn that Asta in the book is female.

Re: Life Question #28 ~ Final Thoughts

I have a couple of questions: Would you want to talk with Keith, maybe over a cup of coffee? And if so, what would you want to talk about?

Re: ONBC's First Read of 2012 is...

I will watch the Thin Man movies every time they're on TV. I adore Nick and Nora! (And Asta and Mrs. Asta!) :bounce: I will search through the overstuffed bookshelves to see if I have a copy of the book.

Re: Life Question #25 - Favorite Songs

I did an internship in college at a home for wayward teens and taught several of them how to play "Miss You" on the piano. A very fond memory.

Re: Life Question #26 - Hard Copy or Audiobook

I read a hard copy from the library (and I had to return it). My daughter has the audio version and said she found Johnny's voice very distracting. She'd think, "Mmm, Johnny . . ." and her mind would drift away.

I must say, Keith's attitude about the situation didn't endear me to him, nor did Anita's.

Re: Life Question #16 ~ Levitation

My former voice teacher wrote her dissertation on the "transcendent moment" in vocal performance. Being "in the moment," becoming one with the music and fellow performers. Sounds as though she should have interviewed Keith.

Re: Life Question #17 ~ Songwriting

I think it's interesting that we've read this immediately after TPOF. Ann was able to write what I thought was an excellent novel after being given guidelines. She couldn't afford to sit around and wait for a muse to visit. She had a job to do, and did it very well. I think she and Keith are both ta...

Re: Life Question #18 ~ The Emancipation of Music

What would you think of someone who said they loved to read if you then learned that they only listened to audiobooks?

I have met Grammy award-winning singers who are contemptuous of "paper musicians," and have said music can't be learned from paper.

Re: HAPPY 8th BIRTHDAY NOODLEMANTRAS!

Happy Birthday to the ONBC! I can't believe we've done 42 book discussions. Wow! And :thankyou: to our moderators, without whom we wouldn't still be going strong. BTW, one of my other book clubs is reading "A Moveable Feast." Guess where I'm cribbing my discussion questions from . . . :whi...

Our moderators make me so lazy. I read about Redlands and wondered what it looked like. Oh well, no need to look it up, because Liz or DITHOT will do that for me.

Wow, that family history does sound like something out of Tennessee Williams, even down to his father's nickname.
