Re: House of Earth Question #7: Tike

This was a simplier time and Tike was a simple man - I don't mean of mind - just took each day one at a time. Not alot of ambition to move forward or to improve his life. Loved his Ella May and their simple life - it was enough for him.

Re: House of Earth Question #6: Love in the Cowshed (!)

The words describing the love scene were beautifully written with much passion. As for my thinking - it went on and on and on.............. I guess editing would have lost some of the passion. The setting in the barn left me feeling itchy and scratchy!!! Sorry!

Re: House of Earth Question #5: Adobe

Adobe comes from the earth and the house built from adobe is part of the earth. I think "House of Earth" is a fitting title. In Western Kentucky where I live - in older days houses or their foundations were made of "sun bricks". This is straw and dirt and water mixed and put into...

Re: House of Earth Question #4: Land

I think Ella May's comment was generous in that she wanted everyone to be able to own a spot to call their own. But how this is obtained is where I differ. I don't think anything - land, belongings, etc. mean much when it is given freely. Earning and working hard by sacrafice and sweat and tears and...

Re: House of Earth Question #3 - Book One

I find that we are all somewhat on the same page here. Johnny loves the underdog and here is a way to honor Woody and at the same time preserve history of a time and how the people delt with their circumstances. We can't all be wrong on how we see Johnny.

Re: House of Earth Question #2: Survivors

If he didn't stay behind - who would have been able to write the true plight of the brave and strong people? I also wonder why the book was not published earlier.

Re: House of Earth Question #1 - The Epigraphs

I think the tone of the first and second epigraph fits the theme of Woody's story. The lost and hopelessness that the family's felt during this very difficult time in history. But the Bibical reference offers hope to all who have faith. Faith can never be taken away. I have read Friedman's several t...

Re: House of Earth Tidbit #13 - Household Items

I live in a log house that my hubby built - it has a furnace and of course all the modern items - but we heat with a wood stove and there is no warmer heat than wood. We split our wood and believe me - during our ice storm 3 years ago when we didn't have any electricity for 18 days it was our heat a...

Re: House of Earth Tidbit #12 - Midwives

Most interesting tidbit. Being a Midwife is an honorable profession and I do admire these women. I also admire the mothers that chose to have their babies at home with the midwife in attendance. I must say though - if the birth is normal everything is fine - but what if there is complications too se...

Re: House of Earth Tidbit #9: On The Shares

Thanks for the tidbit and the pictures. Hard for us to picture how hard life was for these folks. They were certainly tough in mind and body. My grandparents were tenant farmers (in Ill.) after losing their farm during the depression. They were allowed to live in a house in exchange for their labor....

Re: House of Earth Tidbit #10: Of Crops and Cattle, Pigs and Sheep

Very informitive tidbit ffd. I can understand why the poor farmers signed up for this program but I cannot understand why the programs were invented when so many were going hungry not only in the US but around the world. Why couldn't someone find an answer that solved both sides. Guess that is why I...

Wow! Another great tidbit. Feel like I have traveled from Chicago to California. Wish I was younger - what a road trip this would be.

Great tidbit - the highlite pics were like reading a map of history. It was a route of true Americana. Too bad no one had the foresight to preserve the entire route.

Re: House Of Earth Tidbit #1

Great pics - can really get the true feel of Woody's description of the Texas landscape. Having been raised in central Illinois where it is considered flat lands - it certainly doesn't compare to the vastness of this area. The Comanche and Apache and first settlers were certainly strong and tough pe...
