I believe Balashov killed Matula to save Anna, Alyosha and the village. I agree his conversation with Samarin was important, I think that conversation and the crisis brought him back to the man he was before castration. No, I wasn't surprised, probably due to the conversations with Samarin and Anna...

I think Balashov beleived God wanted his destiny to be as such. He realized he must martyr himself for the people, then he would save everyone from worse disasters, thereby allowing himself to become a true angel. :-/ Much like the story of Pegasus.

I enjoyed the book as a whole, and can really admire him for all the extra work and diligence he put into the book. Such details, Names, and historical references were very interesting. I enjoyed the descriptive reading style, it was not so 'potent' as "Perfume" novel, but it was very Euro...

Well, I have a strong image in my head of Orlando as Balashov, so Johnny ought to be Samarin. Then the idea of Iggy pop as a Shaman is fabulous. Or even Keith Richards, since he's made his debut, he might take a liking to acting. Anna, I go for the European look, not necessarily thin, but dark haire...

I'd also like to see him play the Shaman. I think Johnny could really develop it well.

I remember Gemini mentioned she considered Balashov, which I hadn't considered before she had mentioned it. Johnny would be great doing Balashov, but I don't see him going for the highly religious roles. Then there's the self mutilation, which Johnny would have enough emotion for, and the sacrificin...

Good Morning. :morning: Thanks for an easier question, I think. :-) Well, Mutz is the soldier of the group. So perhaps, the sight of more death, compared to the others, has given him more appreciation for life. Therefore, he considers the other 3 (Anna, etc...) as not having a full appreciation of t...

Ahhh...dharma_bum...gotta love it. You always have a unique perspective that's so worthwhile contemplating! :disco: When you live in the moment and embrace change, life is always about possibilities. When you have a single-minded goal, you will always live in a constant state of disappointment in ot...

:freaked: Focused is great if you have a goal, you get there faster. Personally, I'd like to have fun along the way, and have no particular goal in mind. I would have tried to drag the husbands bum out of there quick. Got in an arguement, figured out where eachother stand , then say our good byes, a...

Re: TPAOL Question #10 - Abraham & Isaac

As promised...RE: Receiving comfort from a captor you know is going to kill you. And loving him anyways.... On Pg. 257: ‘Wait,’ said Samarin, raising his hands a little. He didn’t gesture much. ‘Of course I was afraid of the Mohican. I did long to believe that we’d become too close for him to use m...

As suec mentioned, she thinks the book is about tranistion. Having looked as Samarin being an intellectual, and resorting to cannibalism to avoid being eaten by the Mohican, after meeting Anna, he pivots, and brings the boy back, whereas he could have taken the boy for food. :eyebrow: Anna is a pivo...

P.265:
"Deep within himself, Mutz turned in shame from the discovery that he considered it a tiny increment of advantage for his class, the intellectual eating the criminal, rather than the other way round."

Mutz, is the moral intellectual. Samarin is the amoral intellectual.
