In Haining's book,Mrs L is seen as an intimate of Sweeney..The implication is that he discovered the connecting tunnels and rooms between his house and her shop and they were initially used as an easy way of communictiong. It was only later that he came up with his devilish idea. The Charles Fox vers...

The physical setting adds to the sinister effect, for sure...all that fog, smog, gloom, poor street lighting..Imagine London at night..the only real light coming from doorways, when they are opened to let people in and out,the half glow of candles...all very creepy and shadowy..The historical setting als...

I think I know where you're coming from,db :disco: I would hate to think ST would be relegated to a boo/hiss type of villain and I can't see Johnny or Tim allowing the character to be portrayed that way.His actions are totally abhorrent but I am sure that Johnny will have us having sympathy for him....

I haven't read the play [no book :bawl: ] or seen the musical, but I'm hoping for realism from Tim and I hope that he explores deeper into the psyche of Sweeney. I hope the inclusion of songs doesn't lessen the impact of this....Is there any guarantee that all the songs are going to be used.?.Knowing...

Sweeney makes a great boogyman.. :-O I think, deep down,we all like to be scared..that frisson, that shiver of horror is seductive.I think it's also curiosity as QofK.says..As GG says, the word Sweeney has entered the vernacular, through cockney rhyming slang..which is appropriate, because it has been or...

The accepted opinion is that Pitt stole the story from Prest. But Haining has a different take :-O .He says that ''writers like Prest sometimes offered their services to theatre owners in the hope of getting a little financial recompense from their tales, rather than stand by and see them stolen for n...

The over -glamourous description comes from a book by C.Arthur Pearson, published in 1949..Haining doesn't state the title :-O .But it's interesting to note that by 1949 there had been several film versions of ST.The description reads like something from a film ......EDIT..No worries guys :disco:

According to Haining,''Crime was rampant in London in1785-86 but this spate of murders near Fleet Street gave rise to the suggestion that a Human Ghoul was preying on the vicinity,a kind of forerunner to the Victorian era's infamous Jack the Ripper.Certainly there is evidence of this name being band...

Haining quotes various 'descriptions' of her..One description is '' a plain,middle-aged woman, with a cold and uncomfortable smile,'' while another is ''she was tall and slender-like with a mass of dark curling hair and the golden peach-like complexion of the true brunette. Her lips were vividly crims...

That's a close summary of what Haining says  ..He does add that Sweeney's temper was already getting the better of him.He mentions that he ill treated his apprentices/soap boys with a mixture of indifference and cruelty. He says there was an interesting document found in ST's effects after his ...

I've read a bit more of the book now . :clown: Haining has certainly done alot of research ,.He has read lots of publications and early histories of the area...Although alot of what he says could be construed as conjecture..[he doesn't have hard proof, references from primary sources from the 18th ce...

Well,in all this ,I would say there is some truth.Haining says he has researched documents and newspapers ,novelisations and serialisations .From all this, he has sifted fact from fiction,or so he says. :capnjack: But,for example, and GG would not approve of this :capnjack: ,he claims ST was born in ...
