This was a very hard question. Now I must think, but one of the things Gilbert says, and I like is: "I'd rather be wrong than concede that Tucker was right. I never let him win, either, and if he were ever about to, I'd have no choice but to change the rules" (Page 35) But my fave saying b...

I agree with you Betty Sue. It must be lovely being up there, have the freedom, have attanction and is the "ing of the world" as Liz said. The police ride afterwards must be the best thing for Arnie, he is so excited for them, that riding with them must be fun for him. Eventhough it's for ...

Good answers so far, Noodlemantras! Lance does seem to represent success to Endora but I always wondered why Gilbert was the only one that seemed to see through the whole charade. Maybe the others didn't want to? Glad you could make it, inspired! Maybe they knew, but if they told him and talked abo...

Lance Dodge may represent a small town's desparate hope for a sense of importance and recognition and everything that Gilbert thinks he is not. Although Lance seems to be a superficial, D-list celebrity 'talking head', he recieves the attention and admiration from the family (and town) that Gilbert...

It seems to me that Gilbert, hasn't got the chance to talk about what has happened to him through the year. As some of you said he is showing how he feels through acts not words. Maybe he is doing it because he want to move further in life, and to pee on mrs. Brainer's grave or the other things, he ...

I think the way the passage is written is interesting as well. It's almost like being back in his 2nd grade head when you read it. This incident is forcing him to confront those feelings he has tucked away for so long. SamIam, I'm glad your cousin and her friend are okay. It is interesting written....

He does feel guilt and shame. I think the strength of these two feelings is what makes him not want to feel anything. ???

That is interesting, and I agree.

I didn't get the question either, but if I shall answer what DITHOT is asking. It affects him in that way that he can't run away from it. It probably get worse when they finds out the floor is nearly falling through. He gets uneasy and sad, but tries to run away with it, when he is thinking of somet...

You have all pointed it out, what I want to say. They are all either quirk, weird or has something in there life which is bad. Each at there on way. I don't think it is so weird, but as Linda Lee said, Becky is a little odd. She knows to much, and is to sure of herself. She doesn't seem to be a pers...

I think guilt has the most powerfull affect on us. Because a big guilt can break a persons heart, if they never talk about it. Shame is something which can hunts you, but probably will go away after a while. Guilt will always be there (or depends on the case) and after many years with the same guil...

Many questions. What's causing shame in the Grape family, the biggest shame in the family is Momma, which has let herself become the person she is. Gilbert tries to hide his shame for his mother. This was a hard question, have to think a little more about the shame.... I also think Gilbert is ashame...

He uses food as comfort for the characters, they it when they feel sad and lonly. Ecpecially for momma, she eat all the time, because she doesn't want to think about anything else. She sleep, eat and watch TV, eat, sleep and eat. It is to bad but he shows how people uses food as comfort. They also e...

I totally agree on the answers. Poor Gilbert will not move on to the scary and big world which is a head of him. He likes the way the world around him is, and if to much of it changes he will be nervous and unsure. He won't pass on because he is probably afraid to loose the dearest he has, and forge...

Isn't it a question of culpability? Arnie can't help it, he can't help his behaviour. That makes him innocent, he has nothing to take responsibility for. But Momma, she's responsible for her choices. She's an adult, she can make informed choices, but she chooses to act selfishly. She's guilty, and ...
