How many of us could speed 110 mph across the country and not get a ticket? Not get in an accident. Steal all those cars and not get caught?......... I think the thing that attracked Johnny and many others to this book was more the idea of being free, wandering, the day to day existence more than a...

OTR QUESTION #27

Sal and Dean often talk about TIME and IT. How would you interpret their meanings? Example pg. 209: “…the point being that we know what IT is and we know TIME and we know that everything is really FINE.”

I know I haven't taken part in these discussions much, but I am still having a lot of trouble with the subject matter. I was inspired with the post that spoke about not having to like all the books we read in order to learn and grow from having read them ... but I get stuck somewhere between the in...

I agree with you all on the "goof" aspect. But I think "holy" is referring to the feeling inside Jack that Dean had some special spiritual quality in him that attracted Sal--that set him apart from everyone else. I think Carlo felt it, too. I wish I could be more specific about this, but I don't tot...

I agree with Scarlett that maybe the brown was referrring to the brown smog from industry. So I think the white was referring to the fog. If you haven't been to CA you may not know that it can even be foggy inland. In fact, some of the worst fog (the kind where you can't see the car in front of you)...

OTR QUESTION #25

After Sal’s first trip to San Francisco he remarks, “…somewhere far across, gloomy, crazy New York was throwing up its cloud of dust and brown steam. There is something brown and holy about the East; and California is white like washlines and emptyheaded—at least that’s what I thought then.” (pg 79...

Perhaps it's simply an indication that we are always evolving, and seeking to better our lives and ourselves. I find that incredibly noble and far more interesting than being content. It isn't always comfortable, but sometimes out of discomfort springs life's truest reward - growth. I apologize for...

A Waliking Scrapbook

I'm a little late joining in as I'm on different time here in the UK. - he's like a walking scrapbook, in fact I think he's said something to that effect himself! Sands, it doesn't really matter what time you join in on these questions. People join in at all times of the day--even the following day...

Great Answers So Far

I think what Jack was possibly trying to say was that "posed" snapshots, do very little to convey a person's true reality and really don't tell the accurate story of that person. Great answers all around! I agree with Naomi that Jack was possibly trying to say that "posed" snapshots don't really sa...

OTR QUESTION #23

Dean and Sal are looking at some snapshots. When you read this passage did you wonder about your children or ancestors and how they would perceive you? “I realized these were all the snapshots which our children would look at someday with wonder, thinking their parents had lived smooth, well-ordered...

To Suec

Suec. I think if I had seen TMWC I would have been a fan before POTC also. I had never even heard of the movie, though, until I came to the Zone.
