Re: M Train Question #21 - Final Thoughts

And I would like to join Liz in thanking everyone who participated in the discussion. This book pointed out in a very different way what a diverse group we are. I feel more cynical with age and Liz feels less so. I am completely gripped by the Killing and Snoopydances would never have the patience....

Re: M Train Question #20: Two Books

Very well put, Firefly! I did not grow up in NYC in the 70s, but I think San Francisco was very similar, and several of the people mentioned in Just Kids also lived in San Francisco. Also, I've always been attracted to the art scene - everywhere. So I could relate to a lot of what was in Just Kids .

ONBC's Summer/Fall/Spring Read: The Mountain Shadow

One of our best discussions at ONBC was the Shantaram discussion . Let’s catch up with Lin to find out what his latest adventures are in The Mountain Shadow . As the book is 912 pages in hardback, we will give you plenty of time to read it. Tidbits will begin in August, and the discussion sometime ...

Re: M Train Question #18 - Your Fav

I thought some chapters were more interesting than others. My two favorites were the the chapter on her Alamo and Hill of Beans . I liked Hill of Beans the best because it was one of the chapters she read when I saw her in person. She has a great reading voice. But I also got a kick out of couple o...

Re: M Train Question #20: Two Books

M Train a book I might pick up and read from again in the future because each stand alone chapter was a pleasure to read, even when she talked about things I was not familiar with. Don't forget to tell us what your favorite vignette was (see Question 18). I don't want to be the first to answer my o...

Re: M Train Question #20: Two Books

Although the two books are classified as memoirs, I see them as very different in terms of content and approach. These are the differences that stand out in my mind: Just Kids was more linear and covered a period of time and its focus on two people - Patti and Robert. M Train skipped around to diff...

Re: M Train Question #12 - The Killing

I wouldn't have the patience to go through an entire season of a show like that, let alone several seasons. I guess that's why I stick to sit coms and movies. I don't know whether to be envious or feel sorry for you. The intensity with which something like this can grip me is exquis...

Re: M Train Question #12 - The Killing

After all the recommendations here I have started watching the Killing on Netflix and I am enjoying it a lot. I would have watched it if I didn't already know how it ends. :-/ I want to know, and yet I am trying so hard to avoid spoilers!!!! It is really a good show, what I like is that it t...

Re: M Train Question #16: Why This Book?

I am a little older than the rest of you, I believe. I will turn 70 next year. And I find the older I become, the more cynical I become. (Maxine is my hero. ;) ) So when you ask why someone would publish a book, my very first reaction was "for the money". All the artistic reasons came sec...

M Train Question #18 - Your Fav

Patti’s book could be described as a series of vignettes or chapters (short, descriptive, impressionistic essays or sketches).

Which was your favorite vignette? Why?

Re: M Train Question #12 - The Killing

After all the recommendations here I have started watching the Killing on Netflix and I am enjoying it a lot. I have started watching it also... the show really does draw the viewer in. It really doesn't rain that much in Seattle at times maybe :rain: but I have only watched 5 episodes maybe...
