Re: The Mountain Shadow Question #4--Memories

Memories are important to me. I guess I was raised that way, always telling the old stories about family. It is very common for my family to sit around a dining table and someone will say, "tell the one about...." And people will chuckle or shake their heads. I am not sure if it's that th...

Re: The Mountain Shadow Question #4--Memories

This must be a hard question. I apologize for being late to the party today, but I had an unexpected event when I was hit by a driver who went through a red light and totaled my car. That isn't completely off topic because this was an event that I will definitely remember. I hope what I remember is...

The Mountain Shadow Question #7--"...an optimist ruined by love.” How is that dangerous?

Page 10:

“The smile folded from his [Vikram's] eyes as he got into the taxi. I watched him away, worried for the danger in what he was: an optimist ruined by love.”

How is that dangerous?

Re: The Mountain Shadow Question #3--Sanjay's Words

Ibbi, I think that is the opposite of what he is saying. Like Nebraska said, what you have given is useful as well. In fact, I think if you have value you are also useful. But you can be useful but not have value. Does that make sense? I really didn’t think much about this until I saw all of your a...

The Mountain Shadow Question #3--Sanjay's Words

Sanjay’s words repeatedly echo in Lin’s head on pg 71 (and other locations in the book):

Don’t mistake your usefulness for your value.”

Can you relate to these words?

Re: The Mountain Shadow Question #1--Dangerous time in history

Thanks for starting us off, Nebraska . I so appreciate your contributions and assistance for this book. You've been a Godsend during this time of craziness for me. :airkiss:  That is an interesting observation about borders. I hadn't really thought about the quote in those term, but it adds...

A GDR Tidbit

This is not much of a tidbit, and you may have seen this already, but I found it interesting. And it's about as much as I have time for these days.

The Mountain Shadow Tidbit #3: Sufism and Sufi Music

LOVED this tidbit, Nebraska ! I really like the traditional and the popular sufi music. Nice sounds. I think it must be true that whirling is more than just dancing, or they wouldn't be able to whirl in the same direction for so long. It must be the rapture they experience that keeps them upright.

The Mountain Shadow Tidbit #2: Aphorisms

Great tidbit, Firefly.

I'm thinking it's a little bit of the culture and a little bit Roberts. I think I will ask my Indian friend (who has always been very philosophical, himself) if he thinks it is a cultural thing.

We promise that we will begin tidbits on January 2. In the meantime, happy reading, enjoy your holidays and we'll see you...
