Liz wrote:IngridN, thanks for asking this question. As the letters do not have numbers, that I can see, what I will do is refer to the dates of the letters.

Thank you Liz,
In my copy the letters are dated but also numbered from 1 to 304.
referring to the dates will be a great help. :ok:

Re: Hugo Cabret Question #17 ~ The Invention

I am not an english native speaker and every now and then I have to look up words in my english-dutch dictionary. For" invention "the first translation shows the meaning of inventing something but there is also a second translation which translated back into english is: resourceful, imagin...

Re: Hugo Cabret Question #14 ~ Prometheus

I agree with Buster. Prometheus was teacher of technique, an inventor and a creator and so is Georges Mélies. After seeing a film made by the Lumière brothers, Mélies bought his own camera and other technical equipment and with lots of experimenting he created fantasy stories with special effects an...

"curmudgeonliness"
:-O
Never heard or saw this word before.
I wasn't sure if I would find it in my English-Dutch dictionary.
But it's in there... the Dutch translation would be "Zuurpruimerigheid"
which literaly translated would be something like sourplumliness. :ok:

Re: Hugo Cabret Question #9 ~ Speaking of Etienne...

Both Isabelle and Etienne are frequently found at the bookstore of Mr. Labisse and I think that there Etienne found out that Isabelle loves the movies but that Papa George does not allow her to see any movies. Etienne works at the movie theatre and as he says:'I always take pity on people who love t...

Re: Hugo Cabret Question #8 ~ Favorite Character

My favourite character is Etienne.
He is very kind to the children.
He helps them sneak into the movie theatre, he buys Hugo a book, he helps Hugo lend a book from the Library and later on he also has the right connections to help Hugo reveal that George Melies is not dead.

Re: Hugo Cabret Question #3 ~ Black and White

I have another theory why the pictures are in black and white. At the end of chapter 12, Hugo says the following: "The complicated machinery inside my automaton can produce one hundred and fifty-eight different pictures , and it can write, letter by letter an entire book, twenty-six thousand on...

Re: Hugo Cabret Question #4 ~ Hugo

Hugo is a very brave, intelligent and talented boy, and the automaton was the only connection left with his father. He managed to survive because of his belief that, if he could repair the automaton, it would write a message left by his father that would tell him how to continue with his life. Of co...

Re: Hugo Cabret Question #2 ~ Style

The alternation between drawings and text was very surprising. I don’t know very well how to explain it but, when I was looking at the drawings and then arrived at the text which continued the story I was very surprised that I my head I had formed my own text of the book and it connected perfectly w...
