Adding my thanks to all who put this wonderful birthday project together!

Reading about the wonderful work they do at American Family Children's and watching the video of the kids really tugs at my heart, and I'm very happy to donate my small part to help them continue. :goodvibes:

I've only skimmed the thread, but I see we have lots of varying opinions on Burrough's style. Interesting! I'll say it right out. I found this book to be fascinating, and at times I couldn't put it down (but also, the gangster era has always fascinated me). Like many of you, Burrough's abrupt change...

But that day, I pulled into the very narrow side street and then into the back alley, and sat there soaking up the history - my Dillinger moment. There was an Apartment for Rent sign in the front yard. Wonder if it's 303? Oh LiMoss, that's just too exciting. Are you going to find out which ap...

Another very interesting tidbit, Liz - thanks so much for putting it together! I have so many to catch up on!!! It's funny how these cities that grew up near each other (Milwaukee's east/west sides, Minneapolis/St. Paul) began with such rivalry and animosity! War on the bridge!!! Great picture of do...

Very interesting tidbit, Liz - thanks! I'm in the Twin Cities, and I learned things I never knew. Here's a fun thing (well, at least it was for me!). I work on the west side of downtown St. Paul, just a couple blocks off Lexington Ave. Last week I googled the Lincoln Court Apartments, knowing they c...

 Me too, Raven.

That was tremendously interesting, DITHOT - thank you!

Well, I'm not going out on a limb far enough to say that I'll be able to contribute to the discussion (couldn't keep up with Wait Until Spring and never had the chance to read Ask the Dust), but at the very least I'm going to read Public Enemies and follow along as much as I can. I just checked the ...

I think he makes her that because of the way he is anyway, and certainly after he has given her the cameo. And then he destroys her, in his fantasy, and in his action. It seems to me that that this is what Fante is suggesting, a theme of the book. Our hopes, dreams, delusions, are born out of us, b...

I'm sorry to be so late to the Maria discussion - you've all brought up very interesting points and ideas about Maria that are right in line with my feelings for her. One thing that stood out to me was how detached she seemed not only from the community, as you've discussed, but also from her kids. ...

It seemed to me that Svevo felt Maria could never see his soul because she believed him to be a good man. And he knew he wasn't that good man.

The cold in his soul - maybe because he felt his life was a failure.

I agree with all your observations so far – Svevo was a very unsympathetic character. I felt angry toward him most of the time. He bullied his family and was completely self centered. And obviously his infidelity was wrong, wrong, wrong. But somehow worse to me was the fact that he would abandon his...

Such an interesting article - thanks much, DITHOT! Makes me want to read a little shudder pulp! :yikes:

Love the cover art - it reminds me (in a less innocent fashion, of course!) of the covers of R. L. Stein's Goosebumps books.
