Re: Babylon Nights Question #22 ~ Casting

I'm in accord with FAN regarding Spandau. Blondish, rather than dark, rugged, attractive, manly rather than handsome. Sort of Daniel like. Same coloring but bigger guy. Sharon Stone type for Anna. For some reason I saw Perec "buggy" . I think of Toby Mcguire.

Re: The Rum Diary Question #11 ~ Carnival

Boy, it is at these times in our discussions I wish we had the author to check in with. To share our concepts and hopefully yay or nay our interpretations. I remember with Attica, Garry Kilworth responded to some of our ideas. And, in some cases, seemed quite surprised!! At this point I kind of feel...

Re: The Rum Diary Question #31 ~ Thumbs Up or Down?

I liked the book better the second time around. I like the style of writing, but, not particularly WHAT was said. Overall, the story was rather depressing, the mood low. Perhaps there was some sort of sardonic humor running through it. I don't know. I kept wondering about Hunter as I read it. About ...

Re: The Rum Diary Question #32 ~ Joseph Conrad

I found this on Wikepedia, a quote attributed to Conrad: Faith is a myth and beliefs shift like mists on the shore; thoughts vanish; words, once pronounced, die; and the memory of yesterday is as shadowy as the hope of to-morrow.... In this world — as I have known it — we are made to suffer without ...

Re: The Rum Diary Question #29 ~ Getting TRD Published

Eventually Hunter became famous and his work became valuable because he had a name. He was marketable. . Not knowing the original book, I guess we're in the dark in respect to the early rejections. I got kind of an awful hit on the comments from HST. Was he after the "formula"? The best s...

Re: Rum Diary Question #26 ~ Why Not Yeamom?

I have reviewed all comments here with great admiration for all the information and input, BUT, something keeps troubling me, and I guess it is the integrity of the written word. The literary contribution. So, I'm voting with Nebraska, though I will attempt to see the film with an open mind! I did t...

Re: Rum Diary Question #28 ~ From 1959-1998

I think his heart was in TRD. He mentioned the Fitzgerald influence. It probably was hard for Hunter to put his heart on the line. He found his strength and recognition as a journalist. But, I wonder if secretly he would have preferred to be an acknowledged novelist in the world with Hemingway, Fitz...

Re: Rum Diary Question #28 ~ From 1959-1998

Well, he got crustier as he aged. Perhaps the drugs were influential. I think it's cool that the "gentleness" remained and that he didn't edit the personality of Kemp. Again, I am not totally familiar with all of his writings, but, TRD was possibly or really his only attempt at writing a n...

Re: Rum Diary Question #26 ~ Why Not Yeamom?

It's funny about artistic expression and creation. Sometimes you're so close to the work you lose some sort of perspective. How often people are miscast, story lines muddled, direction goes awry. I say this thinking of Johnny and his personal view of TRD. I think he believes in Bruce Robinson and tr...
