Re: Master and Margarita Question #6 - Russian Novels

I think, the American literature has a pretty close analogy with a plot to “The Master and Margarita” – “44, the Mysterious Stranger (or “Schoolhouse Hill”)” by Mark Twain. In this book the seductive Satan goes into medieval city Eseldorf – and puts to the test three children and their families. I a...

Re: Master and Margarita Question #5: "Writers are the Engineers of the Soul"

I don’t love this phrase – “the writers are the engineers of the human souls” – neither in a context of Yuri Olesha, nor in a context of Stalin. I’m rather a follower of Hamlet’s conception – “my soul isn’t a flute, and you can’t play it”. In other words – my soul doesn’t need any engineers, thanks....

Re: Master and Margarita Tidbit #10 - The Devil

The Devil in popular culture is too numerous to mention. He’s been the subject of literature, film, TV and music of all kinds. Yes, and I always wonder – why? Just because people love poison more than bread? Or because humanity needs to test its faith constantly? (in this case the plays with Devil ...

Re: Master and Margarita Tidbit #8 - State Atheism

:) I believe in religious freedom and don't think that it's a good idea to mix it with politics. Yes, I completely agree. Thank you for your answer, Liz. I want to say – I do see and understand, you didn’t want to offend anyone, and I wasn’t offended at all. I see, how carefully and tho...

Re: Master and Margarita Tidbit #5 - Moscow Tour

Angelina, please share whatever you would like about Moscow. We'd love to hear what you have to say. Yes, I shall (a little bit about TMM places), but now I would like to thank you for a beautiful and very exact tidbit. A describing of TMM places and photos - it's difficult to do something better. ...

Re: Master and Margarita Tidbit #8 - State Atheism

BUT I just can’t resist pointing out that religion has always been and always will be a controversial subject and just can’t seem to free itself from the state. These are words of a true atheist, Liz. :-) If you mean any religion in general. But if you mean only Russian Christian Church, you add to...

Re: Master and Margarita Tidbit #5 - Moscow Tour

People probably live an entire lifetime and never see the countryside or farm animals. Trust me, I saw it. :-) We aren’t tethered to the city with chains, and many residents of Moscow often travel, spend their vacation in different places including country areas, many of them have country houses, d...

Re: The Master & Margarita: Pre-Tidbit 5 What's In A Name?

So, tidbits are started! Thank you, Liz and Firefly, for interesting reading. Sadly, I have a little intense schedule on my job these days, but I hope, I can be with you soon. The Russian names were making my head spin, and I had an inkling there were meanings behind some of them that I wasn't picki...

Re: Summer Reading with ONBC

Firefly and Liz , thank you for warm words! I ’m rereading TMM now (probably, 15th time)), and wait this journey very much. I also knew about TMM on ONBC pretty late, only when I saw pre-tidbits. I remember TPAOL discussion very well too, and especially those wonderful, deep and careful tidbits by ...

Re: Summer Reading with ONBC

Thank you for your choice! I wanted for a long time to offer “The Master and Margarita” for ONBC discussion, and I’m very glad this book will be a guest on this board. I would like to add some videos, where Johnny mentions “The Master and Margarita” (dear moderators, as always, feel free to move it)...

Re: A Moveable Feast Tidbit #14 ~ Zelda

Is it just me or does it seems like people with troubled lives are more creative? I think, this is another eternal question. Perhaps, if they are, it would be too simple recipe for a creativity. http://www.johnnydepp.ru/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif BTW, I noticed several times, right now...

Re: TCD Question #22 ~ Johnny on Corso & The Ending

Liz Thanks for sharing about your discussion of the movie (even though I said we would just be discussing the book here). I’m very sorry, Liz , I didn’t want to break the order of a discussion. I just was delighted with the quote, because on our forum we haven’t a general opinion, is Corso ...

Re: TCD Question #22 ~ Johnny on Corso

Johnny Depp stated: ...The woodcuts in The Nine Gates made by Lucifer himself are signed LCF… Corso’s first name (in the book) is Lucas Corso… Initials: LC… F? Wow! Thank you, DitHot! In discussions about The Ninth Gate on our forum we debated the theory about, Corso is the devil himself, who goes ...
